Another GOP Health Care Bluff

“You know, I could maybe give you 10 reasons why this bill shouldn’t be considered. But Republicans campaigned on this so often that you have a responsibility to carry out what you said in the campaign. That’s pretty much as much of a reason as the substance of the bill.” — Sen. Chuck Grassley, Iowa Republican, to reporters Thursday.

Another Republican, Sen. Pat Roberts of Kansas, also tells the real story: “If we do nothing, I think it has a tremendous impact on the 2018 elections. And whether or not Republicans still maintain control and we have the gavel.”

There you have it: The reason GOP health care “reform” will end up nowhere — again. Republicans are just trying to show their political base that they are really REALLY trying. I stand by my initial thoughts three months ago when this running gag started — The GOP’s Big Lie To Its Own Base. Republican leaders don’t want to repeal Obamacare because they have no idea how to replace it and they certainly don’t want to own something that repeals its most popular benefits.

    Trump repeatedly promised that he would cover all Americans when given the chance to repeal and replace Obamacare. He stated that coverage for everyone was “​just human decency” back in February of 2016.
    By then, he had already promised universal coverage. When he was a presidential candidate in 2015, Trump told CBS’s Scott Pelley on 60 Minutes that “everybody’s got to be covered.” He conceded that it may be an “un-Republican” thing to say, but he wanted to ensure that everyone had quality health care.
    “​I am going to take care of everybody. I don’t care if it costs me votes or not,” Trump said. He added: “​The government’s gonna pay for it.”
    More recently, as president-elect, Trump reiterated his support for the idea in January.
    “We’re going to have insurance for everybody,” he said in an interview with The Washington Post. “There was a philosophy in some circles that if you can’t pay for it, you don’t get it. That’s not going to happen with us.”

  6. billie bob, the princess dog, just got a new friend named “bu” which is short for “bubala” who looks similar to the puppy pictured above.  she is thought to be a lab beagle mix (with some unknown others thrown in for spice according to the local humane society).

    iow a labbe or beagador as the uppity designer dog fanciers call them.  she’s almost 3 months old and as cute and cuddly as they come.  billie bob isn’t impressed. however, bodhi the cat thinks she’s the cat’s meow.

  7. actually, “bu” is a compromise for the 3 top names seriously considered: bubala, buddha dog and bubba girl.  they needed the new name at the shelter for microchip purposes and I had to make an on the spot decision so I went with the 1st two letters of the favored suggestions.  diplomacy at work on the home front.  too bad it’s a past art at the state dept now.

I was one of the people doused with agent orange; they keep on admitting to more vets having conditions relating to it. I also picked-up cocci while working in the Nevada desert. And I sense that I have indications of whatchamacallit–starts with a ‘B’, that they now say may be connected to the orange. And why am I having more trouble with reading? I keep on buying books.     Even if you don’t want to use the VA for your health care, you may wish to register  your health issues with them and to have your doc know what they know

    My brother was in Vietnam also and certain of his medical conditions are cared for through the VA because they assume responsibility.  Plus it adds to their information about these issues.

    It covers quite a wide variety of issues from jungle living to agent orange.

  21. I haven’t had a meaningful encounter with the VA since we left St Pete. They put me thru grad school using the disability portion of my bennies; I’m grateful for that. I’m in the process of getting my ID renewed, etc., then I’ll to get reexamined, and hopefully become service connected for the emerging conditions. That would raise me above the 40% that I’m currently at. And, perhaps they will have some good things to say about the state of my health.

    As reported at WaPo, this new Trump/GrahamDontCare bill is meeting red state resistance.

    I’m told that many Medicaid directors from states with Republican governors privately blessed a statement from the National Association of Medicaid Directorsthat sharply criticizes Cassidy-Graham as unworkable and deeply destructive.
    TheNAMD statement argues that Cassidy-Graham, which would end the Medicaid expansion and replace it with block grants to states, starting in 2020, is simply not doable for most of them. The NAMD says that the scope of implementing this change “cannot be overstated,” adding that “the vast majority of states will not be able to do so within the two-year timeframe envisioned here.”

    It turns out that the people who would be tasked with implementing these radical changes — including many appointed by Republicans — share this view. The question is whether that will weigh on the few remaining undecided GOP senators. It should — if they care in the least about the real-world consequences of their votes.

    I heard this giving the money to the states was supposed to be a good thing.  Guess I heard wrong.

Senator Graham can campaign on trying to fulfill Republican promises in future Presidential runs (Conservative cred-?) while Senator McCain can be the fall guy for his friend. Jack, I hear ya, but look at it this way – by him coming out publicly without the drama of the last vote, it heaps a good bit of ridicule on Graham and Cassidy before their “debate” Monday night with Bernie” and Amy.  It also sheds light on the weakness of SF and McMertle to get their own party behind their plans to hurt the poorest among us.  What could have been a big win for them and a big loss for us citizens has very little hope of passage. Plus it gives other waffling repugs some cover to say no and really kill the damn thing.   I’d bet an up or down vote now would come out at about 45 for and 55 against.  Spun right this could be a huge win for the Dems, thanks in large part to McCain.  One thing it will point out in stark terms if a couple more senators come out and openly oppose it is that SF has almost no political capitol even in his own party.

Mocking the South Carolina senator’s stance as a man of chivalry, the Massachusetts senator charged him with taking “a mistress . . . who, though ugly to others, is always lovely to him; though polluted in the sight of the world, is chaste in his sight—I mean,” added Sumner, “the harlot, Slavery.”

    Representative Preston Brooks was Butler’s South Carolina kinsman. If he had believed Sumner to be a gentleman, he might have challenged him to a duel. Instead, he chose a light cane of the type used to discipline unruly dogs. Shortly after the Senate had adjourned for the day, Brooks entered the old chamber, where he found Sumner busily attaching his postal frank to copies of his “Crime Against Kansas” speech.

    The Department of Homeland Security contacted election officials in 21 states Friday to notify them that they had been targeted by Russian government hackers during the 2016 election campaign.

    Three months ago, DHS officials said that people connected to the Russian government tried to hack voter registration files or public election sites in 21 states, but Friday was the first time that government officials contacted individual state election officials to let them know their systems had been targeted.

    Officials said DHS told officials in all 50 states whether their systems had been attacked or not.

    Friday’s notifications were made after state elections officials and some federal lawmakers expressed frustration that Homeland Security had not yet disclosed the extent of the Russian attempts to infiltrate voter registration systems.

    State elections officials in Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Iowa, Maryland, Minnesota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Wisconsin and Washington were told Friday they were targeted, according to officials and a tally by the Associated Press.

  58. Sturg, I drink 3-10oz cups a day. I get the most coffee for my money at publix. I keep an eye on their ads, buy the bogo items in the semper paratus fighting taste that I want, then fortify it with their ultra bargain espresso. It’s really good and makes the keurig refillables affordable.
