A decision by US President Donald Trump to place a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminium imports has left some of the US’s major trade partners scrambling to make a deal.
The US is a major steel importer, importing nearly a quarter of the steel it uses, according to data from the American Iron and Steel Institute, which adds that its dependence on aluminium is even greater.
Its neighbours Canada and Mexico, as well as some allies in Asia are among its main suppliers.
Trump has said his latest tariffs will take effect on 12 March “without exceptions or exemptions”.
With just over a month to go before the tax kicks in, here is how some countries have responded.
[continues with Canada, Australia, UK &EU, India, So Korea responses]
What next?
It’s unclear what deals might actually be cut or waivers granted over the next month, but Eswar Prasad, an international trade policy expert at Cornell University, says in the long run, US trading partners may seek to diversify away from the US by selling their products elsewhere.
But he also says that “Trump’s drastic actions have put the rest of the world on the back foot” because of the US economy’s strength relative to most of its trading partners.
Wendy Cutler, vice president of the Asia Society Policy Institute, says that while the US’s trading partners may seek appeasement in the short term, they could still decide to hit back in the long run.
“While overtures may be made to work with the Trump team to avert the tariffs, our partners may conclude that tariffs are coming so fast and furious, negotiations are not a durable option,” she says.

Hmmm. House Bill 8281 passed and is now in the Senate. Your ID must match your birth certificate, so guess what happens if your last name doesn’t match. Guess who changes their name when they get married. Neat, huh.
A federal judge has ordered that the FBI must release some records related to its investigation of President Donald Trump’s handling of presidential records that have been sought under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
In a memorandum opinion issued Monday, Judge Beryl Howell wrote, “Given the current circumstances and legal landscape—including that President Trump now enjoys absolute and presumptive immunity from criminal liability, the government has dismissed criminal charges against President Trump and … and no pending or even contemplated criminal enforcement action within the applicable statute of limitations on the topics of responsive records is at all likely,” the exemptions the FBI cited to block the release of information no longer apply.
Exactly three years ago, on Feb. 10, 2022, Axios reported that New York Times correspondent Maggie Haberman’s then-upcoming book, “Confidence Man,” included a claim that White House staff “periodically discovered wads of printed paper clogging” the presidential toilet.
Trump issued a statement calling the story “another fake story, that I flushed papers and documents down a White House toilet, is categorically untrue and simply made up by a reporter in order to get publicity for a mostly fictitious book.” (A footnote in Howell’s opinion notes, “In August of 2022, Haberman released photos of notes at the bottom of two toilets, and, according to her sources, one photo was allegedly of a White House toilet while the other toilet was overseas.”)
Eight days later, on Feb. 18, 2022, a letter from the National Archives described how President Trump allegedly brought classified records to his personal residence at Mar-a-Lago after losing the 2020 election.
This kicked off a high-stakes legal fight to return the records to government control and would eventually lead to an FBI search of Trump’s residence. What came next were felony charges and a series of stunning legal and political victories that would propel Trump back into office and make the charges he faced effectively disappear.
But as questions swirled around the February 2022 allegations of mishandling of records by Trump, Bloomberg News reporter Jason Leopold filed a FOIA request for six categories of documents. The first five categories pertained to documents stored at Mar-a-Lago, but the sixth category requested information about any records mentioning “Presidential Records from the Trump White House that were destroyed and … allegedly flushed down the toilet.”
The FBI argued they were exempt from responding to the request about the Mar-a-Lago investigation citing possible harm that could come to a prosecution and issued a so-called “Glomar” response to part six of the request, meaning the FBI would not confirm or deny the existence of records about alleged toilet documents.
[…]
Howell writes, “somewhat ironically, the constitutional and procedural safeguards attached to the criminal process include significant confidentiality mechanisms,” but for an immune president, such protections, “may simply be unavailable, as it is here.”
“The FBI’s Glomar response is improper, and the categorical withholding of the responsive records contained within the Mar-a-Lago investigative file is insupportable where, as here, no pending law enforcement proceeding exists, or can be reasonably anticipated, and the Mar-a-Lago investigation has been iced,” Howell writes.
No records were released immediately in the case, but the parties must submit a joint status report in 10 days to propose a schedule to conclude this case. It is unclear if the government will seek an appeal to block any further release.
Poobah,
Can a judge send marshals to arrest the head of that agency?
Or impose fines, levies on the agency?
Who pays said fine, and to whom?
Good question about enforcing court judgments against administration figures. Tough to say what the answers to those questions are under the current administration because the Marshall Service is an agency of DOJ. Ultimately they report to Pam Bondi, whose ass is on the line with FFFF if she approves the Marshalls arresting one of F’s agency heads. Before 3 weeks ago this would be an easy question to answer. Now it’s either pure speculation or (more likely) easier – it ain’t happening. But assuming as true the first 2 questions you pose – that an agency (or agency official or head) fails to obey a court order and is held in contempt …
As for the imposition of fines or levies on the agency, I’m not aware that agencies can be fined by Federal Courts. Sovereign immunity and all that jazz. Congress might be able to hold an agency official in contempt and try to impose a fine but I think that’s a stretch for the same reason. Assuming either is possible, it’s an interesting concept because the source of the money to pay any fine against an agency or an official acting in his/her official capacity is the US Treasury, so assuming the fine was imposed and there was any inclination by the affected agency to pay a fine, it would be paying the fine back to the source of the funds.
bId – on its face that bill is unconstitutional, Amendment I would lead the charge. But, with the court that used to be supreme making decisions I would not bet against it becoming a law.
“Rep Earl Carter (R-GA) introduces legislation “authorizing President Trump to acquire Greenland and renaming it Red, White, and Blueland””

pogo, but if said administrator who’s in contempt is a member of the bar, couldn’t the honorable judge be creative threatening a well-placed complaint that would put that membership (and career) in jeopardy? DODO’s not the only one that can play the retribution game.
We can quit wondering. They are ignoring court orders.

Should we hit the streets and protest Musk/Trump?
Like the late Dennis Hopper said in an interview, the 60’s and 70s had a strong “us versus them” division. Armed with stats and opinions from liberal columnists printed in the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette, by age 15 I was calling radio shows and standing strong against the land invasion of Viet Nam by Americans, as by 1965, US Marines had landed in Da Nang, and shortly later, troop ships landed in the south, in Vung Tau. After I returned to the USA in 1971, I joined John Kerry’s Viet Nam Veterans Against the War, establishing a small group of us in Fort Wayne. We marched illegally in the Veterans Day Parade, I protested in front of the Allen County courthouse and against Agnew in Fort Wayne in 1972. Either our group or me with a buddy from Detroit, we protested in Chicago, Detroit, and Washington several times. In Manhattan, we were chased by assholes who loved the bombing of children’s hospitals. The odd thing is that in that anti-war demonstration, many Queer people were there protesting for their rights, and the reason Greg and I were chased under threat of a beating was they thought we were also Queer.
A misunderstanding which could have resulted in injury, but Greg and I were in shape then and we outran the fascists.
So did we do any good? The 1967 moratorium did; I didn’t make those protests, but I felt compelled to do what I thought right.
My physical status has deemed I have retired from political demonstrations but I cheer them on. Musk must be stopped, and younger able-bodied folks must shout his movement out of existence.
patd, sure, that might work with lawyers who want to retain their licenses, but the mechanism for it would be a bar complaint to whatever state bar they belong, then application of the Rules of Professional Conduct. Even then if the lawyer is not acting in his or her capacity as a lawyer, it probably won’t go anywhere.

It is too late to take the flag back, I’ve flown a flag for years with just that belief. I took it down, it no longer represents any value that I want to endorse. I put a flag pole up at my house when I move here 4 years ago. Rather than have an empty flag pole I now fly a United Federation of Planets flag over the Klingon flag. This is a consulate of the United Federation of Planets, under the protection of the Klingon empire. Harass us at your own risk, we are armed and ready.

Key points from the FCPA:
Under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), it is unlawful for a U.S. person or company to offer, pay, or promise to pay money or anything of value to any foreign official for the purpose of obtaining or retaining business.
A U.S. person or company may also be any officer, director, employee, or agent of a company or any stockholder acting on behalf of the company. And a foreign official may be a foreign political party or candidate for foreign political office.
Also covered by the FCPA is the authorization of any money, offer, gift, or promise authorizing the giving of anything of value to any person while knowing that all or a portion of it will be offered, given, or promised—directly or indirectly—to any foreign official for the purposes of assisting the U.S. person or company in obtaining or retaining business.
“Knowing” includes the concepts of conscious disregard and willful blindness.
The FCPA also covers foreign persons or companies that commit acts in furtherance of such bribery in the territory of the United States, as well as U.S. or foreign public companies listed on stock exchanges in the United States or which are required to file periodic reports with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The offering, Yaccarino noted, will support an in-platform digital wallet and peer-to-peer payments connected to users’ debit cards, with an option to transfer funds to a bank account.”
And that’s why MuskRat killed the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Since all we have to do to change a name is put it out there for all to see – Elon Musk is now Ellen Musk.
“Trump didn’t create a new Cabinet-level department with DOGE, but rather renamed the previously existing United States Digital Service, which was created under former President Barack Obama.”
“That office launched in 2014 to improve the federal government’s digital capabilities following the rocky rollout of the HealthCare.gov website.”
“Trump’s order also moves the entity from the Office of Management and Budget to the Executive Office of the President, and directs it to modernize technology and software across the federal government.”
Folks, I did not know this. I think we’re cooked. I mean, if Elon weren’t such a tool that he wanted the name changed to DOGE…
Sure, it expands what tech it was set up to troubleshoot, and it’s now under control of the Executive Office instead of the OMB, but Vought heads up the OMB now, so no difference if it were still there.
Aside from a general strike/boycott, I think it’s up to the military or a third party to fix this mess. And that third party could be the global community issuing sanctions against us; some have already started do trade deals with each other instead of with the US.

People in streets, people not at their jobs, people not buying anything. Bring it to a screeching halt.
Continue boycotts of Coca-Cola, Target, etc. (Even though Target says it will bring back DEI, they’ve shown everyone who they are.)
Does Adolf want to declare martial law? Yes. However, if the mere thought of martial law keeps folks from protesting, he still gets what he wants. Don’t be compliant. Let the world see it and sanction the US.
Will Iran or someone get involved when they hear that now Adolf not only wants to level Gaza and build one of his motel hells, but says he won’t have to pay for it, he’ll just “have” it? He’ll just take it and displace Palestinians. Gotta be a lot of anger out there toward him and the whole hee-haw gang.
jack gets it, especially the last part
ok look forward to photos of all of you at these protests
We should not gather in ways that give him the opportunity to gas and shoot people on live tv. That’s the show he’s itching to star in.
He wants payback on that trashy Kendrick show.
Even Taylor Swift was caught off guard. You could read her lips: What’s happening?
Fear is what Fascists count on
and laziness
You ask for pictures, It would have been better yesterday in the sunshine and wind. Today you get drizzle and a slight breeze.
Fascism is here..

Logged in as requested. So FFFF is trying to “pause” the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Enquiring minds would like to know WHY? (To say nothing of the fact that he’s trying to “pause” enforcement of a LAW PASSED BY CONGRESS). Is there a smell of brimstone around here or is that the smell of Elon – or is there any difference?
Poobah,
Can you translate this please?
Ha, as if it is a favor granted to AP rather than the other way around. Doesn’t this fall under “the capitalist will sell the rope that is used to hang them”.
If the AP really wants power all they have to do is give a 2 letter answer “OK”. Then write an article about the Gulf of Mexico

Key points from the FCPA:
Oh the mind boggles..
today’s Pod Save is relevant to this discussion, you could just listen to Lovett more effectively make the same points i am trying to
We are sleepwalking into a Fascist state. No tool should left in the tool box
not “into”, already there, you’ve said it yourself many times, literally in this thread an hour or so ago
so why you encouraging democratic tools
The weather outside is still wintry but it’s likely to heat up.
Strange. The AP statement has vanished from their web site. But I copied the text before it did.
AP: “We were informed by the White House that if AP did not align its editorial standards with President Donald Trump’s executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, AP would be barred from accessing an event in the Oval Office.” https://www.ap.org/the-definitive-source/announcements/ap-statement-on-oval-office-access/?s=09
Fascist states don’t rely on fear, they create fear. If you don’t believe that then just wait until they shove your ass out the back of a helicopter into the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
It is why the opposition needs to be smarter, everybody knows that they aren’t fascist.
Yet.

“Visa is the first partner for the platform’s “X Money Account” service, which is set to launch later this year, X CEO Linda Yaccarino said in a Tuesday postannouncing the news. The offering, Yaccarino noted, will support an in-platform digital wallet and peer-to-peer payments connected to users’ debit cards, with an option to transfer funds to a bank account.”
And that’s why MuskRat killed the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Since all we have to do to change a name is put it out there for all to see – Elon Musk is now Ellen Musk.
https://www.npr.org/2025/02/04/nx-s1-5286314/department-of-government-efficiency-doge-explainer-elon-musk
A turd by any other name would smell.
we just become the Russia of the West is all
replete with the hallmark mysterious deaths of regime critics and obstructionists
Musk keeps little X around for two reasons:
1) PR to make him look like he has family values
2) As a human shield. Notice he carries him on his shoulders a lot so he can’t get pewed with a headshot.
What happens to all of the pot farms and distilleries when the yt churchy nationalists are fully installed?
That’s a lot of tax dollars to states, but it would be an easy way to incarcerate a lot of folks in private prisons and get slave labor out of them. Non-violent criminals will be picking strawberries.
Soon to the Supremes.. just in: A federal appeals court in Boston just rejected the Trump admin’s request to pause a lower court’s order that temporarily halted Trump’s massive freeze in federal funding.

A very long time ago, in a different world, the Beatles played their first concert in the U.S. It was after their time on the Ed Sullivan Show, it was in Washington D.C. in 1964, February 11. It is fun watching, we were so young back then. For youngsters, the Beatles broke much of the U.S. youth music world.
All we need to know about today in the White House
More Fascist Capture
listening to Olbermann…
American democracy didn’t die at trump’s 2nd inauguration, it died when a third of the electorate didn’t participate, and a 20% participation rate in the primaries certainly didn’t sustain it
use of lose it, we didn’t and lost it
and time for Olbermann to run for Senate or something or stop casting blame
ok Keith if we are at Ft. Sumter, announce your 2028 PotUS candidacy tomorrow
KO? Can’t see him running for office.
Jon Stewart? Absolutely.
Pete Buttigieg, Jon Ossoff, Amy Klobuchar,
I think Fetterman is voting for some of these terrible cabinet picks because Adolf has threatened deport his wife to Brazil. Running the country like a mobster.
Interesting to see Elon answering questions in the OO, while Adolf just sat there and looked disinterested.
Craig – Can’t do the town hall (and not sure I should anyway, since I’m not from Maryland); I have a zoom then.
One more Google thing to navigate. My US Rep uses Google Forms for follow-ups. I’m not using any Google products. They have changed their policy, no longer promising not to use AI for surveillance (or weapons).
https://www.nbc.com/nbc-insider/snl50-the-homecoming-concert-performers-time-how-to-watch
If y’all need something to do on Valentines Day (Friday), there’s a great concert on Peacock, which I’m debating getting for a month.
Who is performing at SNL50: The Homecoming Concert?
The SNL50: The Homecoming Concert lineup is, frankly, incredible — and stay tuned for more acts to be announced in the days leading up to the event:
jon stewarts a moron, pretty sure even he’d tell you that
although i’d still encourage him and all people you listed announced 2028 candidacies tomorrow
