“Not with a bang but a whimper” is an idiom that means to end on a muted note, most likely in a situation where one would have expected a more spectacular finish. The phrase is taken from the last stanza of T.S. Eliot’s poem “The Hollow Men”. It is typically used to describe the end of something. If something happens not with a bang but a whimper, it is less effective or exciting than people expected or intended.

Live Updates: Israel Accuses Iran of Breaking Cease-Fire Announced by Trump
Underscoring the fragility of the deal, Israel said Iran had fired another missile barrage and threatened to retaliate. Iran’s military denied launching an attack after the cease-fire went into effect, Iranian state news outlets reported.

The fate of a truce announced by President Trump that went into effect early Tuesday hung in the balance, as the Israeli military said Iran had fired another missile barrage and vowed to retaliate.

The claim from Israel’s military came just hours after the country joined Iran in agreeing to the truce, spurring cautious hopes for an end to 12 days of unprecedented warfare between the adversaries. Iran’s military denied firing more missiles after the cease-fire went into effect, according to Iranian state news outlets — adding to the uncertainty.

Mr. Trump’s announcement had caught some of his own officials by surprise, and both sides continued to trade fire in the last moments before confirming a truce was in effect.

The Israeli military said it had struck missile launchers in western Iran that were poised to fire at Israel. Iran launched at least four barrages of ballistic missiles at Israel, setting off sirens that sent millions of Israelis rushing in and out of shelters for over two hours. At least four people were killed when a missile hit an apartment building in the southern city of Beersheba. The emergency services had earlier reported a fifth death but then revised the toll back down to four.

But by around 7.30 a.m. in Israel, a tentative calm appeared to have taken hold as the military issued an all-clear, allowing people to exit bomb shelters. Soon after, President Trump announced the truce was in force. “PLEASE DO NOT VIOLATE IT!” he added.

There was initially silence from the Israeli government, which has in the past often waited before declaring conflicts over — waiting in the first, delicate hours to see whether quiet is being answered with quiet. Just after 9 a.m. local time, Israel’s government issued a statement saying it had agreed to a mutual cease-fire, having achieved its goals in its campaign in Iran, “and in full coordination with President Trump.”

But underscoring the fragility of the situation, more sirens wailed in northern Israel nearly two hours later, warning of missiles launched from Iran. The Israeli military accused Iran of breaking the cease-fire — saying in a statement that it would “respond with force.”

  2. The president announced America’s bunker-busting attack on Iran in a strange late-night speech, after approving the strike based on “a feeling” over actual intelligence, and regime change in Iran appears to be on the table.

The Iran-Israel conflict has seen some dramatic developments in the past few hours. Here’s a quick summary:

At 06:08 BST, Donald Trump posted on social media that a ceasefire between Iran and Israel had come into effect
Just over an hour later, Israel said it had agreed to the US ceasefire proposal, while Iran said earlier it would stop attacking if Israel did the same
Then at 08:30, the Israeli military said it had identified missiles launched from Iran and intercepted them over northern Israel
Iran has denied firing any missiles, but the IDF insists Israel will “respond with force”
Before the truce began, both sides exchanged heavy fire overnight
Iranian state media say waves of missiles from Israel have hit the capital and other cities – at least nine people have been killed, including a nuclear scientist
Some residents told BBC Persian they saw one of the “heaviest” barrages since the conflict began 12 days ago
In Israel, at least four people have been killed and 22 injured in Beersheba

Hours after Trump’s dramatic ceasefire announcement, region remains on edge. Here what you need to know
From CNN’s Rob Picheta and CNN staff
US President Donald Trump announced what he described as a “complete and total” ceasefire between Israel and Iran on Monday.

But that truce appeared in jeopardy hours later. Israel on Tuesday morning accused Iran of breaking the agreement and said it would “respond with force.” However, a senior security official in Iran told CNN that after midnight ET “no missiles have been fired at the enemy so far.”

Here’s what you need to know.

Trump declares a sudden ceasefire: “I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, “THE 12 DAY WAR,” he wrote on social media, revealing a truce that appeared unlikely just hours earlier. Iran and then Israel said they had agreed to the ceasefire, which Trump said would go into effect early on Tuesday morning. “I think the ceasefire is unlimited. It’s going to go forever,” Trump told NBC News.
Israel accuses Iran of breaking the deal: But Tuesday morning, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said that his country “will respond with force” after Iran’s “utter violation” of the ceasefire. The Israeli military intercepted two missiles launched from Iran at Israel, an Israel Defense Forces official told CNN.
Iran denies the claims: Iranian state-affiliated media outlets denied that Iran fired missiles at Israel. A senior security official in Iran added that after 7:30 a.m. local time, “no missiles have been fired at the enemy so far.” The official told CNN: “If Israel makes a mistake, all occupied territories will be attacked, just like an hour before the war stopped.”
The world watches: Trump’s announcement of a halt in fighting was met with relief and cautious optimism. Qatar helped to get Iran on board, a source familiar with the matter said, and leaders in the region praised the deal. China meanwhile said it “hopes” the truce would be implemented soon. But ceasefires in the region are notoriously fragile, and a possible breakdown in the deal left nations on edge.
Deal follows Iran’s attack: Any ceasefire, even a fragile one, appeared a distant prospect just 24 hours ago, when the US was primed for an Iranian retaliation after Trump ordered strikes on three nuclear facilities in the country. But Iran’s move was muted: Qatar intercepted all Iranian missiles that targeted the US-run Al Udeid Air Base on Monday except for one, which fell in an area that caused no casualties. Trump on Monday thanked Iran for “early notice” of the attack, which seemed to be a face-saving move. Diplomatic sources told CNN they were hopeful that Iran’s retaliatory strikes would serve as an off-ramp
Will Gaza be next? Yair Lapid, Israel’s opposition leader, said after Trump announced a ceasefire that “this was now the moment to close that front” in Gaza. “To bring the hostages home, to end the war. Israel needs to start rebuilding,” he said. More than 55,000 people have been killed in Israel’s war against Hamas in the enclave, and dozens of Israeli hostages remain captured. “Those who can achieve a ceasefire with Iran can also end the war in Gaza,” the Hostages and Missing Families Forum added in a statement Tuesday.

President Trump on Tuesday unleashed on the Israelis and the Iranians, expressing his displeasure at continued fighting between the two adversaries after he announced the parameters of a ceasefire the day before.
“We basically, we have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don’t know what the f— they’re doing,” Trump told reporters at the White House before taking off for a trip to The Hague for the NATO Summit.
In a Truth Social post around the same time, Trump singled out Israel, in a remarkable move for the U.S. president, telling the longtime American ally: “ISRAEL. DO NOT DROP THOSE BOMBS. IF YOU DO IT IS A MAJOR VIOLATION. BRING YOUR PILOTS HOME, NOW!”
Trump told reporters at the White House he was going to see if he could “stop it” when asked about the continued attacks lobbed by both sides overnight after parts of the ceasefire were to be put in place.
“They [Iran] violated it but Israel violated it too,” Trump said. ”I’m not happy with Israel.”
Trump’s public criticism of Israel marked a significant departure from the policy of former U.S. presidents, including Trump previously, who have steadfastly stood by its longtime ally.
Both Israel and Iran accused the other of continuing attacks overnight.
Israel on Tuesday morning, a few hours before Trump’s comments to reporters, said that it will respond with force because Iran violated the ceasefire, CNN reported. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the country will “continue the intensive operation to strike” Tehran.
Meanwhile, an Iranian missile strike hit a residential building in Beer Sheva, Israel before the just ceasefire was set to go into effect, killing four people, according to CNN.
Trump on Monday night announced the parameters of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, indicating that Iran would stop the fighting first, followed by Israel and that all fighting would end in a matter of 24 hours. He expressed confidence in a Truth Social post that the end of the fighting between the two countries, which he dubbed “the 12 day war” would stick.
He later told NBC News Monday night he believed the ceasefire between the two bitter rivals would last “forever.”

A senior Ukrainian lawmaker who nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize has withdrawn it, as peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow slip under the radar and the president keeps his sights fixed on the Middle East.

Trump is “is evading—he is dodging—the need to impose sanctions on Russia,” Merezhko said.

Merezhko said Trump had “virtually no reaction” to recent large-scale strikes on the Ukrainian capital, adding: “He has chosen the path of appeasement.”

Trump, who touched down in The Hague, Netherlands, on Tuesday for NATO’s largest summit of the year, landed in the wake of announcing a ceasefire between Iran and Israel. “PLEASE DO NOT VIOLATE IT!,” he added in a post to his Truth Social platform.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller owns a massive stake in Palantir, which stands to make millions off of Donald Trump’s sweeping immigration crackdown, according to the Project On Government Oversight.

…owns between $100,001 and $250,000 in assets at the defense company. Miller reportedly acquired the stock after Trump exited the White House in 2021, but sometime before he enacted his sprawling plan to bolster immigration enforcement. The data had been revised as recently as June 4.

Last month, the Trump administration tapped Palantir to help build a massive system to allow federal agencies to better share their data with each other, creating a huge database that will serve as a surveillance tool for the state. Palantir has also been angling to get involved with the U.S. Navy’s efforts to fast-track warship building.

Palantir has been the highest performing company on the S&P in 2025, with its stock price surging 80 percent this year alone.

Given Miller’s involvement in Immigration and Customs Enforcement, his financial stake in Palantir should raise significant concerns over potential conflicts of interest. Should he direct an update of DHS’s digital systems, Palantir could stand as a likely beneficiary.

  13. @realDonald Trump
Stupid AOC, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, one of the “dumbest” people in Congress, is now calling for my Impeachment, despite the fact that the Crooked and Corrupt Democrats have already done that twice before. The reason for her “rantings” is all of the Victories that the U.S.A. has had under the Trump Administration. The Democrats aren’t used to WINNING, and she can’t stand the concept of our Country being successful again. When we examine her Test Scores, we will find out that she is NOT qualified for office but, nevertheless, far more qualified than Crockett, who is a seriously Low IQ individual, or Ilhan Omar, who does nothing but complain about our Country, yet the Failed Country that she comes from doesn’t have a Government, is drenched in Crime and Poverty, and is rated one of the WORST in the World, if it’s even rated at all. How dare “The Mouse” tells us how to run the United States of America! We’re just now coming back from that Radical Left experiment with Sleepy Joe, Kamala, and “THE AUTOPEN,” in charge. What a disaster it was! AOC should be forced to take the Cognitive Test that I just completed at Walter Reed Medical Center, as part of my Physical. As the Doctor in charge said,
“President Trump ACED it,” meaning, I got every answer right.
Instead of her constant complaining, Alexandria should go back home to Queens, where I was also brought up, and straighten out her filthy, disgusting, crime ridden streets, in the District she “represents,” and which she never goes to anymore. She better start worrying about her own Primary, before she thinks about beating our Great Palestinian Senator, Cryin’ Chuck Schumer, whose career is definitely on very thin ice! She and her Democrat friends have just hit the Lowest Poll Numbers in Congressional History, so go ahead and try Impeaching me, again, MAKE MY DAY!

AOC RESPONDS TO TRUMP ATTACK: “Mr.
President, don’t take your anger out on me – I’m just a silly girl. Take it out on whoever convinced you to betray the American people and our Constitution by illegally bombing Iran and dragging us into war. It only took you 5 months to break almost every promise you made. Also, I’m a Bronx girl. You should know that we can eat Queens boys for breakfast.
    Respectfully.”

*Ha! Congrats to AOC for her new nickname, “The Mouse.” That proves he’s afraid of her. If she’s a mouse, she’s a mouse that roars.

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — President Donald Trump on Tuesday injected some uncertainty over whether the U.S. would abide by the mutual defense guarantees outlined in the NATO treaty as he headed to its summit — comments that could revive long-standing concern from European allies about his commitment to the military alliance.

“Depends on your definition,” Trump told reporters as he was headed to The Hague, where this year’s summit is being held.

“There’s numerous definitions of Article 5. You know that, right? But I’m committed to being their friends.” Asked later aboard Air Force One to clarify, Trump said he is “committed to saving lives” and “committed to life and safety” but did not expand further, saying he didn’t want to elaborate while flying on an airplane.
