One More for the Road-EO

Who says PBS is only for the political elite?

Join PBS NewsHour’s Meredith Garretson as she learns how to make the perfect mint julep for this weekend’s Kentucky Derby. Barrel’s Mint Julep Ingredients 2 oz bourbon 1/2 ounce simple syrup 2 cups crushed ice Mint bunch Tools Mint julep tin (or 12 ounce cocktail glass) Cocktail jigger Muddler Directions: Take 3-4 mint leaves and place them in cocktail glass. Add the simple syrup and muddle. Remove and discard the mint. Add the bourbon, one cup of ice, and stir. Top with remaining ice so that it forms a dome-like top on the glass. Finish with a garnish of mint and drink with a straw.

“But I don’t want to go among mad people," Alice remarked. "Oh, you can’t help that," said the Cat: "we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad." "How do you know I’m mad?" said Alice. "You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn’t have come here.” ― Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

  3. The idiot in the WH found another computer image to post on twit a few hours ago. I am not bothering to post it as he does not need more publicity, he fails to understand how horrible he is, just counts how many times he sees himself as winning.

This time he takes the pope thing another step. He is wearing the robes and mitre of a pope and is seated like one. It is very bad, something most Roman Catholics will take offence to. It is showing how mad he is, Mad King Donny. At some point this will get the repubs/gop/magats to move to 25 him. He is really going off the edge of reality into deep space.

  4. Jamie, on the overnights, Dexter the Night Watchman jumped on Sandman to win.

  5. This time he takes the pope thing another step.

BB, I assumed it was fake but maybe he stole the outfit during his Rome trip.

  6. From time to time I’ve caught whiffs of anti-catholicism wafting off my maggers. A legacy of the old-time-religion some of them remember from childhood.

  7. wapo agrees with sturge about the mudder of the day and ’tis a very very wet day in KY today.
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2025/05/03/kentucky-derby-rain-2025-sandman/

The forecast for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby includes a couple of showers and a thunderstorm, per AccuWeather, which also suggests “rain gear may come in handy for the Derby.”
How would that impact the race? The Run for the Roses has seen a wet or sloppy track four times since it adopted its current qualification point system in 2012. In that time, one-dimensional front-runners have not performed well in the mud at the opening leg of the Triple Crown. They have not hit the board (finished first, second or third) in any of those four races contested over a non-fast track, and do not figure to be competitive this year, either, if rain has affected the track surface by post time. Instead, look for No. 17 Sandman to get an edge on the field if conditions worsen.
    […]
I like Sandman on Saturday no matter the conditions, but if the skies open up on Derby Day, Sandman’s chances should only improve. His pedigree suggests an affinity for wet tracks, with proven off-track performers on both sides of his lineage. Add in Ortiz’s strong record on muddy surfaces and Sandman’s tactical versatility and upward form cycle, and he shapes up as a major player if the track turns sloppy.

  8. Handicapping the Derby is unlike handicapping pretty much any other race. None of the horses has run the 10-furlong distance. None of them has run in a 20-horse field. None of them has experienced the frenzy that is the Derby crowd. Pace scenarios can dissolve as soon as the gates open, traffic is virtually a given and, sometimes, you need more luck than skill to earn the blanket of roses.

  10. The AI (or A-One, as the Secretary of Education says) Pope Drumpf pic is because he REALLY doesn’t want you to talk about the tRUMPcession .

It’s tRUMP’s Trade War on Christmas.

Call it by his name. Failure is his brand.

  11. BiD… I agree. Even Dumbass knows he can’t be Pope. It’s all about the shiny object to get the media to follow it… and they do.

  12. I am excited about Tiztastic. I only pick horses for the names i like — no research. And I like this horse name best of any for a long time. A fun word to say, should replace “Awesome” and “Fire” (the TikTok word for awesome)

  13. I won’t post the list again but I’ve got Dexter on Sandman and will record any other late entries if they come in.

    Hate a wet track.

  14. Ha! tRUMPsky has lost the Australian election, too. Proximity to Orange Adolf is toxic.

    Wake up, Congressional Republicans!

  15. Don’t you have to be Christian to be Pope?

…and go to church once in a while?

  16. My understanding has always been that to be a pope you have to be pear-shaped.

    I could be wrong.

  17. Craig… I do the same thing. I picked Sandman because I liked the name. I had no idea he was one of the favorites and that he was grey.

Jamie… I read somewhere that this year’s entire K Derby field has Secretariat’s bloodline. Didn’t do any research… but if true… that’s interesting.

  18. It wouldn’t surprise me. Breeders are always looking for the Secretariat heart. It’s a genetic anomaly of unusually large size that meant he could run almost forever. His Belmont run is still legendary.

  19. And not be an adulterer, and a grapist, and a felon, and…

OK, media! They are robbing the US of freedoms, treasure & data! FOCUS!

Bernie holding another rally in PA. Wish the media would cover that a bit, too. Give hope to some folks who don’t know where to look for it & think they are alone.

  20. In fact, a search of pedigrees shows every horse running in the 151st Kentucky Derby is a descendant of Secretariat. While it sounds impressive, more often than not, if you go back six generations in most horses, you’ll find they’re a descendant of some great, like Secretariat or Northern Dancer.

Secretariate still holds the speed record for all three legs of the Triple Crown

Trump administration asks Supreme Court to let DOGE access Social Security systems

The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court on Friday to clear the way for Elon Musk ’s Department of Government Efficiency to access Social Security systems containing personal data on millions of Americans.

The emergency appeal is the first in a string of applications to the high court involving DOGE’s swift-moving work across the federal government.

It comes after a judge in Maryland restricted the team’s access to Social Security under federal privacy laws. The agency holds personal records on nearly everyone in the country, including school records, bank details, salary information and medical and mental health records for disability recipients, according to court documents.

*Aaaaand that’s another reason why the AI Pope pic was posted.

  22. Well, actually according to Luke 17, 20-21 we is all our very own pope. Leastways the way I read it. He kinda spilled the beans there.
    KJ version.

  23. Trump suffers under the delusion that all his pronouncements are Ex Cathedra and therefore infalible. More proof he should be committed and impeached (25th)

  24. Has Adolf publicly picked a horse, so those owners can lose like the Chiefs on Superbowl Sunday?

  25. We took a kitchen chair outside and attached a grinder on it with a vice grip to make horseradish. Processing it inside will take your head off. A bit on mashed potatoes. Perfect. Never had any with dairy before.

  26. His father was a mudder.

Flipping channels & saw that sloppy mess.

  27. Ha!

According to the prophecies/legend of St. Malachy, Pope Francis was the last Pope. The world is so upside-down, I wouldn’t doubt it.

TikTok astrologers say the 3rd/4th, something big is supposed to happen with regard to the US. 🤞🏻

  28. Welp, just mixed up a mint Julep in honor of the Kentucky Derby, only I forgot to put any mint, simple sugar ice in it. Oh wait it’s just some bourbon. And not Kentucky Bourbon either. Looks a little damp there. I see the odds for my horse have dropped to 8-1. I like it.

  29. Yeah Jamie.
Went out and bought some mint
Though I will say if I going to put mint in a drink I prefer a mojito.
I wonder what a mojito with bourbon would taste like? Lime juices and soda added to mint julip?
    might work.
    Jack

  30. I wish there was a way for tv to capture the feel of the horses crossing the finish line. If you are standing on the rail you can feel the earth shake.
A bad live horse race is better than the best on TV.
    Jack

  31. Well, as Derbies go, it was a wet one. Jack, bourbon ain’t rum… but… a mojito is a rum julep with Rose’s.

  32. I’m thinking I will save the mojito until the next time I’m in Key West. But they are good.
Also, back to sipping my bourbon straight, at least one more for tonight. I don’t guzzel it like I used too.
    Jack

  33. Watched this last night on my TV, something else that is not as much fun by yourself at home.

  34. well, you know who’s gonna really feel the impact of auto parts tariffs is middle-class people

Rich people don’t give a shit what their car repair costs

You’ll never meet a rich person in an auto parts store

  35. If you are standing on the rail you can feel the earth shake. – Jack

  36. Bid
Yes a weird Sven tonight, mostly known for Ray Harryhausen’s stop-action animation of giant crabs and such .
Most times I just watch to see Svengoolie (Rich Koz)

Seems now I can’t find the comment I answered. Hmm….

  37. Susan Sarandon has obviously made a deal with the devil, which would explain her starring in a movie with Vince Vaughn

Hope she’s happy with the political environment she helped encourage, thanks Susan 😒

  38. i only have FM/AM radio in my American classic automobile, so it’s just permanently set to the local public classical station. Today they ran bumpers lamenting the proposed revocation of CPB grants- guess who will buy those stations and licenses when public stations fold? 🤔

Everything’s a hustle with these thieves our dumb friends and families elected
