Mourning in America

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, in honor and tribute to the memory of President James Earl Carter, Jr., and as an expression of public sorrow, do hereby direct that the flag of the United States be displayed at half-staff at the White House and on all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions for a period of 30 days from the day of his death.  I also direct that, for the same length of time, the representatives of the United States in foreign countries shall make similar arrangements for the display of the flag at half‑staff over their embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.

I hereby order that suitable honors be rendered by units of the Armed Forces under orders of the Secretary of Defense.

I do further appoint January 9, 2025, as a National Day of Mourning throughout the United States.  I call on the American people to assemble on that day in their respective places of worship, there to pay homage to the memory of President James Earl Carter, Jr.  I invite the people of the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn observance.

Fitting tribute to a remarkable guy who deserves better than he got.

So Long Jimmy. I was lucky to have you for political inspiration at a young age. I see college kids worshiping Trump and wonder if at my age now they’ll regret it.

I am sort of surprised Jimmy was not brought to the Naval Academy for a couple of days. He is the only USNA graduate to become president. The last president of the era.

As the former president is laid to rest this week, his critics and enthusiasts are at odds about what his presidency meant to the country and the world. But there should be no debate about what the son of Plains, Georgia, meant for the South.

A friend went to Rotunda yesterday and they gave these out. Very classy.

It so happens I am driving right past the National Cathedral during the service, on way to doctor’s appointment, so I’ll give him a wave.

FEMA was President Carter’s creation. I did not know that.

I hope anyone in Congress who hides behind the Bible and knows better than to support the tRUMPsky/Project 2025 agenda will do some soul searching (if they didn’t sell it, outright)…or just burst into flames the next time they utter a churchy lie.

I did not know that BiD, nice catch..
FEMA Mourns Agency’s Founder President Jimmy Carter
WASHINGTON — FEMA joins the nation in mourning the passing of President Jimmy Carter. The 39th U.S. president will be remembered for his service to our nation as a Naval officer, governor, diplomat who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (2002), and Habitat for Humanity volunteer. At FEMA, he will also be remembered as our agency’s founder. President Carter created our agency in 1979, strengthening our country’s ability to address disasters.

Poor Obama, Trump has not stopped talking to him and he’s trying to be polite. Noticed W shook hands with Obama, totally ignored Trump.

President Carter built homes.

Prez-Elect Orange Adolf prohibited POC from living in his buildings.

The side-by-side is glaring.

FEMA going into operation in California. Thank You, President Carter.

You-know-who hasn’t even offered condolences to those who’ve died in the fires.

patd, it’s a balmy 26 here this morning, with no wind to speak of. We’re waiting for whatever doesn’t get left with you tomorrow night. The good news is that the temps are rising a little – still below freezing, but still warmer than today’s predicted high of 24 (my thermometers disagree with TWC’s).

BB, that’s a good point.

BiD, “POS Orange Adolf prohibited POC from living in his buildings.” Fixed that for you.

I had forgotten Steve Ford was an actor.

The part President Ford included that President Carter reminded us Jesus was a carpenter. (Not a real estate swindler, a carpenter. Real work.)

POS Orange Adolf (thanks, Pogo) isn’t even able to comprehend what’s going on. He’s probably thinking about his lunch order; with or without cheese. Hmmm.

Observers blast Trump for ‘disrespectful’ conduct at Carter funeral. “Watching Trump talk to Obama at Carter funeral. Obama looked like the guy stuck in airplane seat next to a guy who won’t shut up.”

If Michelle had been there, she would’ve been seated next to SFB. Barack taking one for the team.
Karen Pence didn’t shake Adolf’s tiny hand, nor even look at him.

If I’m still around after SFB eats one burger too many, I’ll be having a party. If I go first, I’ll be haunting him.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/trumps-greenland-overtures-are-scaring-confusing-residents-rcna186932

“The world’s largest island has been under Denmark’s control since the 14th century, and most of its citizens belong to Inuit tribes. But for the longstanding independence movement in the autonomous territory, being sold by the Danish government to their American counterparts is hardly part of the plan.”

“We are a proud Indigenous people with right to self-determination and not some sort of good that can be traded,” Aaja Chemnitz, a member of Greenland’s parliament, told NBC News, adding that the future “is for Greenlanders to decide, and the majority wants to be independent.”

“On the same day, his son Donald Trump Jr. visited Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, which was covered in a thick blanket of snow. If he’d looked beyond the smattering of enthusiastic supporters wearing MAGA hats who greeted him, he would have found a mixed reaction and some alarm among ordinary Greenlanders to Trump senior’s suggestion of brute force.”

*Hmmmm, MAGAt hats in Greenland? Paid some folks to do that so they could start building their lie.

WaPo: (Jennifer Rubin)

The New York Times wrote a few days ago, “President Biden is bequeathing his successor a nation that by many measures is in good shape, even if voters remain unconvinced.” Just how good are things? Here’s how the Times described the state of the economy:

“For the first time since that transition 24 years ago, there will be no American troops at war overseas on Inauguration Day. New data reported in the past few days indicate that murders are way down, illegal immigration at the southern border has fallen even below where it was when Mr. Trump left office and roaring stock markets finished their best two years in a quarter-century.

“The Financial Times reported last week on “why America’s economy is soaring ahead of its rivals.” Time published an essay in November that said, “President-elect [Donald] Trump is receiving the strongest economy in modern history which is the envy of the world.”

Funny kind of mess the country’s in.

Pogo – When I moved to this little town, I heard two women at the grocery store saying how frightened they were of immigrants coming across the TX border; they were talking about the young woman who’s death was exploited by Adolf at the Republican n@zi Convention.

There is no cable in this house, but the family listens to Joe Rogan, the bug-eating comic who filled the vacuum left by Rush Limbaugh, religiously. I would argue that most of the so-called “Christian” males are actually followers of fragile-ego misogynists like themselves.

It would be nice if President Carter’s public service caused some of Adolf’s followers to have a bit of introspection and maybe even regrow their spines.

ps – In addition to thinking about his lunch order during the service, SFB was probably also thinking about how much bigger and goldy-er his service will be. I can see it now. Fifth Avenue is closed down for a public service, then his plus-sized casket ascends the escalator in tRUMPsky Tower of Babel.

Jimmy could’ve chosen to be buried at Arlington.

The Carters’ decision to forgo burial at Arlington National Cemetery in favor of their Georgia home reflects their humility and deep personal values. Throughout his life, Jimmy Carter was known for his modesty and dedication to human rights, qualities that endeared him to many. His final resting place in Plains serves as a testament to a life lived in service to others, grounded in the simplicity of his origins.

https://www.texastribune.org/2025/01/09/texas-summer-school-lunch-food-stamp/

“Texas is silent on whether it will offer summer food assistance for students”

“Nearly 40 states have chosen to participate in a more than $2 billion grocery program that gives low-income families an extra $120 per child to help feed them during the summer break.”

“But Texas, which has 3.8 million children eligible for the program, is not one of them.”

“Last year, when the federal funding was first offered, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission passed on it, saying it did not have enough time to set up the program. This year, commission officials have not said if the state will participate, referring all questions about the program to this section in its legislative appropriation request for 2026 and 2027, filed months ago.”

“Half of the states who have not yet joined the summer program have been slow to expand programs for low-income residents, the biggest of which is Medicaid. Texas, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee and South Carolina are among the 10 states that have refused to expand Medicaid health insurance to more state residents.”

*Jesus wept.

BiD, they would probably be better off worrying about the drug-addled meth heads in their local trailer park than Central Americans coming across the Texican border.

My dad and my uncles would have been eligible for inurnment at Arlington or for burial at a VA National Cemetery, but they never apparently considered it. The one uncle who retired from the USAF wsa eligible for either. Not sure where he elected to be buried, but I don’t think it was a National Cemetery.

Well, SCOTUS told Dumbass “nope”.

“A divided Supreme Court refused to delay Donald Trump’s sentencing in his hush money case, clearing the way for the president-elect to face judgment in a New York courtroom on Friday and to be formally classified as a felon before he returns to the White House.

“Trump turned to the Supreme Court in a last-ditch effort to stop the hearing, citing the conservative majority’s explosive opinion in July that granted him and other former presidents immunity from criminal prosecution for their official acts.

“He is set to be sentenced Friday, after a jury convicted him of 34 counts of falsifying business records related to a hush money payment made to an adult-film actress during the 2016 election. New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan, who presided over Trump’s trial, has said he does not plan to give the incoming president jail time or probation.”

… which formalizes his status as a convicted felon.

I wonder if those mugshot Tees will again sell like hotcakes.
