Could opposition from military members endanger another Trump run for the White House? He hasn’t done much to change their minds.
Four years ago, before reports of him calling them “losers” and “suckers”, and before telling aides to keep injured soldiers out of his photo-ops, a Military Times survey found that most active-duty personnel opposed his reelection, helping produce his defeat.
So it makes sense the Trump campaign is in damage-control overdrive after his latest insult to veterans, spurning a federal law against using Arlington Cemetery as a political prop.
In 2020 a survey of 1,018 active-duty troops found that nearly half of respondents (49.9 percent) had an unfavorable view of the president, compared to about 38 percent who had a favorable view.
An astonishing 42 percent of military members said they strongly disapprove of Trump’s time in office, saying their view of him was “very unfavorable”.
Some of the reasons for Trump’s unpopularity four years ago:
— Trump’s comments against the “deep state”, generals and other career federal positions.
— Trump’s dismissal of reports that Russian officials offered bounties for Afghan fighters to target and kill American troops.
— Trump’s suggestion that active-duty military personnel should be used to respond to civil unrest in American cities.
— Trump’s moves to drawn down American military personnel levels in Germany and South Korea.
— Only about 21 percent of troops saw immigration as a significant national security issue, but 48 percent identified white nationalists as a concern.
In the 2016 Military Times Poll, nearly twice as many respondents said they planned to vote for Trump than then Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. Exit polls from the election showed a similar margin after election day.
add news of this getting to current military folks in addition to the arlington snafu that very unfavorable 42% may ring the majority bell

Kamala Harris
@KamalaHarris
As Vice President, I have had the privilege of visiting Arlington National Cemetery several times. It is a solemn place; a place where we come together to honor American heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service of this nation.
It is not a place for politics.
And yet, as was reported this week, Donald Trump’s team chose to film a video there, resulting in an altercation with cemetery staff. Let me be clear: the former president disrespected sacred ground, all for the sake of a political stunt.
This is nothing new from Donald Trump. This is a man who has called our fallen service members “suckers” and “losers” and disparaged Medal of Honor recipients.
A man who, during a previous visit to the cemetery, reportedly said of fallen service members, “I don’t get it. What was in it for them?”
This is a man who is unable to comprehend anything other than service to himself.
If there is one thing on which we as Americans can all agree, it is that our veterans, military families, and service members should be honored, never disparaged, and treated with nothing less than our highest respect and gratitude.
And it is my belief that someone who cannot meet this simple, sacred duty should never again stand behind the seal of the President of the United States of America.
I will always honor the service and sacrifice of all of America’s fallen heroes, who made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of our beloved nation and our cherished freedoms. I mourn them and salute them. And I will never politicize them.
BTW happy labor day! a tip of the hat to those who fought the good fight that gave us the 8 hr day, safety in workplace regs et alia

Analysts predict an upswing in U.S. corporate earnings for 2024, with expectations of an 11.1% rise after a modest 3.1% increase in the previous year1. Corporate profit margins are expected to rebound through the first half of 2024, as companies resort to layoffs and other cutbacks to guard the bottom line2. Estimated year-over-year earnings growth for S&P 500 companies in the first quarter of 2024 is 7.4%, down from 9.6% previously3.
Here is a handy chart done by Nate Silver for evaluating how national polls relate to Electoral College outcomes.
It shows that Dems need at least a 2-3 point lead to get over the 270-vote Electoral College threshold.
Harris has a 2.8 point lead right now (the bare minimum to win) if we average the polling averages done by 538, RealClear Politics and Nate Silver.
For a comparison, Biden got 305 electoral votes with a 3.8 point popular vote lead.
And always the caveat: Polls are INSTRUCTIVE and NOT PREDICTIVE. This is only what it looks like right now.
Sturg, try YouTube. Comes up there on a google search.
BiD, no idea where he’s going to be performing. He’s trying to figure that out.

But while we always say polls are not predictive they do get better the closer we get to Election Day. We are now at the point where polls increasingly predict election outcomes. At about 75 days out history shows a rapidly declining difference between current polls and the actual vote.
Missed the news among the comments. What is the name of LP’s album. I have Amazon.
The debate is looming. Will he or won’t he?
Unless they time his meds just right, he will be foaming at the mouth. Will be wild.

Happy Labor Day.
Eat the billionaires…or tax them.
Yes. Found the Savant of Steel Strings by googling same. Going to listen to some pickin’.
I always salute the memories of Big Bill Haywood, Eugene V. Debs, Walter Reuther, and the IWW, The Wobblies. All had a hand in fighting for working people. The Communist element was slowly filtered down and workers could embrace the movement. The most amazing aspect is how with many plant closings the UAW was declared a dinosaur and irrevelant for quite a few years. Not any damn more! Shawn Fain will go down in history as the most influential UAW President in our history. The man gets it done.
The 2 most offensive signs I have seen the past few years are “Joe-Ho-Gotta Go!” and this latest one, a giant flag flying atop an old decrepit manure spreader in this yard on OH-15 north of Bryan: “Trump was right about everything”. This family has flown Trump flags since 2021 atop the old manure spreader, with “Beijing Biden” always staying. Oh, we know where these people get their news. Their TV is “tune in and throw away the knob” Fox News and a computer history search would yield all the usual suspects. I have committed to calling people to encourage them to vote for Harris-Brown-Kaptur. My step-daughter in Findlay started arguing with me on what she sees as the merits of Trump. Same old shit. Thing is, she’s so dedicated to job and family she never watches any news at all. I try to pass on some bits about Trump and she says Harris is a failed VP, no more Kamala. My step-daughter has two advanced degrees in medicine and psychology but let me tell you folks what you all know: that doesn’t mean shit when it comes to studying candidates, and so far I have converted zero fence-sitters or Republicans.
I am not in favor of long c+p posts, but this is the only way I can do this. It is Labor Day. Tom Hanlon , a fellow Viet Nam vet, was killed on the job where I worked, after I retired. A press tripped crushing him. This happens yet today. Tom was from Chicago, a transfer to our plant after Chicago Dana closed, as we were Dana Corp. then, before becoming Eaton Corporation’s clutch plant.
AUBURN
Members of UAW Local 164 and other employees of Eaton Corp. commemorated Workers’ Memorial Day Wednesday, paying tribute to an Auburn employee who died last June in an industrial accident.
The service was held in Tom Hanlon Memorial Park, named for the 16-year Eaton employee killed in the accident.
Eaton plant manager Bill Braun deserves credit for the idea to establish the park, said Mark Payton, financial secretary for Local 164. The park is just outside the employee entrance on the west side of the factory. It was built by employees working with a landscaper, Payton said.
This is the first year that Eaton employees conducted their own Workers’ Memorial Day ceremony, Payton said.
A Veterans Day service previously was held in the memorial park with members of Hanlon’s family. Hanlon was a Vietnam veteran.
At the service Wednesday morning, a color guard composed of veterans conducted a flag ceremony accompanied by a trumpet call, then placed a wreath on a granite memorial stone memorializing Hanlon’s death.
The union local’s chaplain, Bob Bell, conducted the memorial service.
“Thirty-four years ago today, Congress passed the Occupational Safety and Health Act, promising every worker the right to a safe job,” Bell noted.
“Unions and their allies have fought hard to make that promise a reality, winning protections that have saved hundreds of thousands of lives and prevented millions of workplace injures.
“On April 28 each year, the unions of the AFL-CIO observe Workers’ Memorial Day to remember those who have suffered and died on the job, and to renew the fight for safe workplaces,” he said.
Bell read a roster of nine UAW members killed over the last year.
“This year has a special meaning to our local’s brothers and sisters, since we honor one of our own, Tom Hanlon,” Bell said.
Keep trying Dex. I keep working on my new SIL. She is what is called a low information voter. Her son is a trumper and she votes the way he does. She’s sweet as pie… is feeding my cats while I’m up here in the North Country. She doesn’t like some of trump’s behavior… so there’s still hope.
Happy Labor Day, y’all.
Pikes Peak was not a bust! It was glorious up there at 14,115 ft. Numerous cadets from the Air Force Academy enjoying leave with their families. We were asked to take one family-in-uniform’s photo at the overlook, and of course we did that for them. Every small service by us citizens is part of the whole. We rode up the Cog Rail with a sophomore from PA with his mom and dad. It was great to hear their experiences as a new military family. I asked who nominated him, it was Fetterman. Everybody was festive and happy.
Hammer them
Kamela just finished remarks to union folks in Detroit, she’s introduced at 3:30 mark…
Take a gander at this foreigner bastard SOB.
DEPORT HIM, send his ass packing.
Nate Silver: “Trump & Harris received slight bounce from their conventions after all – Trump’s was short lived, while Harris’ is holding going into Labor Day.” (historically the average convention bump is 1.9)

“Half a million Israelis took to the streets in multiple cities on Sunday, protest organizers said, in one of the biggest nationwide protests since the outbreak of Israel’s war on Hamas.”
”Hundreds of thousands turned out again on Monday, according to union Histadrut, with Israeli police arresting seven demonstrators in Tel Aviv for “violating public order and disrupting traffic.”
“The country’s largest labor union, known as Histadrut, threatened to shut down the “entire”economy, with its chairman Arnon Bar-David warning on Sunday that Israel was “in a downward spiral, and we don’t stop receiving body bags.”
“The nationwide strikes – which ended on Monday at 2:30 p.m. local time (7:30 a.m. ET) following a Tel Aviv court order – reflect growing anger toward Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The prime minister has been accused of stalling efforts for a deal by some hostage families and their supporters.”

Far as I’m concerned they can skip right over all that “New Day” obvious sugar spraying stuff; but let it pass.
lol joke of the week and it’s only Monday
yo it’s really hard to go against the herd, and no one wants to be a pariah in social company, BUT if they remember the positive things their smart Aunt Rose or wise Grandpa Charlie said about Kamala or maybe even the sage warnings about the stooge, in the privacy of the voting booth, your influence may bear fruit, so keep up with the messaging
make no mistake, this election will be an inflection point, one way or the other, and you get to be a part of it

There are more convicted criminals in the goopers. Musk is a moron and he should be fixed literally.

He obviously is a liar.

And – this is the day for my grandfather and mother. My grandfather United Auto Workers, American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations, UAW AFL-CIO. My Mother is a Teamster (no need for a lot of letters). We did celebrate Labor Day.
Think of those who died so we could have this day.

Sturg, so THAT’S why I like you. We have the same Greek ne’er-do-well in our family tree. We’re cousins. I tried Ancestry once but found out it was relying on me to know who my ancestors were. Shit, if I knew that I wouldn’t need Ancestry.
Now, Mrs. P went to the Ellis Island database on one of our trips to NYC and was able to find the ships her dad, a couple of paternal uncles, and her maternal grandparents came to the US of A on in the 30s & 40s. Before that they were all in Italy. (And good luck finding anything there) Her dad had put together this extensive set of notes on his side of the family in Italy that her mom threw out in one of her cleaning sprees. Let’s say her dad was fucking pissed and leave it at that.

Trump didn’t get memo that Big 3 nets do Labor Day packages to ramp up campaign coverage? After lots of Harris/Biden/Walz bites, NBC: “Notably, although former president Trump claims he has the support of rank and file union voters he was not on the trail on this Labor Day”
Nothing gets past him.
Not a single word about politics the entire weekend, but one of the home-schooled teen descendants asked me why is it called “Labor Day” and who are they?
Golfing?
https://governor.alabama.gov/newsroom/2024/04/governor-ivey-other-southern-governors-issue-joint-statement-in-opposition-to-united-auto-workers-uaws-unionization-campaign/
“We the governors of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas are highly concerned about the unionization campaign driven by misinformation and scare tactics that the UAW has brought into our states. As governors, we have a responsibility to our constituents to speak up when we see special interests looking to come into our state and threaten our jobs and the values we live by.”
I knew someone who worked at Maytag in Iowa. They were union and were warned not to push for full medical and a raise or they would all lose their jobs. The plant closed and relocated to Mexico. Companies who do that should be boycotted.
Tonight, the cutting news on ABC was that a piece of railing had fallen off of the Titanic, and there was a kid who wanted to attend the Air Force Academy or become a commercial pilot.
Instead, I would like to see a story about a company who is not screwing over its employees, or a country who does provide free college or healthcare to its citizens. Those stories exist. If the media can’t provide actual news, at least air stories with some substance to move this country forward. Heck, a story about any of the thousands of companies who do screw over there employees would even shine a spotlight on the weasels. Loss of ad revenue, though, so garbage and fluff it is!
“Countdown with Keith Olbermann is a production of iHeartRadio.
Trump filmed a commercial while standing on top of the graves of dead American war heroes. I am surprised he didn’t try to sell us sneakers or trading cards or Bitcoin or the rest of his shit. And his staffers assaulted a woman employee at Arlington National Cemetery, and he blamed the families of the dead because his campaign broke the law, and his fascist gang of thugs is running wild with this as if Kamala Harris has anything to do with it, and eight days later there still isn’t a Senate investigation or a Defense Department investigation or a real journalistic investigation, and one of them better be started goddamned immediately.
And the media continues to cover up for Donald Trump. Cover up. Not the cover up of his campaign emails hacked by a foreign government and sent to the New York Times, Washington Post and Politico.
Not their cover up of that story, because this time that matters. Not the cover up of the reported $10 million bribing of Trump just before the 2016 election by President El Sisi of Egypt. Not that cover up by the major newspapers[…]”
