Alito and Thomas remain proudly obstinate | The Seattle Times

First, we learned that the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was active in the “Stop the Steal” effort to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Now, it has come to light that, in the wake of the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, the wife of Justice Samuel Alito raised an upside-down American flag on the pole outside their home, a distress symbol that had been adopted by supporters of the insurrectionists.
Both Thomas and Alito insist that their spouses’ provocative political acts had nothing to do with them and that, therefore, there is no reason they should recuse themselves from ruling on cases before the high court that involve convicted Jan. 6 rioters or Donald Trump, the former president who urged the insurrectionists to march on the capitol.
In any other court in the land, jurists would be barred from hearing such cases because of the obvious appearance of bias, but members of the Supreme Court do not have to live by any such rule because the proud boys in the black robes are unelected potentates with lifetime tenure who are limited only by the elasticity of their personal ethical standards.

  3. on another subject of party over country:

whether nikki was trying to solidify the veep slot or just looking ahead to 2028, all “good” GOPers pols have to kiss the ring to be considered according to this from the hill:

… Haley, along with the other then-2024 Republican presidential hopefuls, signed a Republican National Committee pledge to support the nominee. The pledge was required for candidates to take part in the primary debates. Trump did not sign the pledge.
“If you want to have a future in GOP politics, you have to back the nominee,” the Republican strategist said. “To have a future in the party, you can’t ever be seen as not being supportive of the nominee and frankly particularly if they were to lose. You never want to be the one partially or in this case maybe unfairly or not, significantly blamed for that.”

  4. click here for stephen’s monologue described as

More Americans are smoking weed than ever before, a Supreme Court Justice and the Speaker of the House have both flown a flag associated with Christian nationalism and the Jan 6 insurrection, and Donald Trump thinks President Biden will drop out of the presidential race before November.

  5. Telnaes gets it and outs Roberts as being in the center of this disgraceful time in the life of the court.

  6. Of course, Zelensky shouldn’t go along with this but, combined with Putin firing his top general and arresting another recently, it seems like a pathway out of this is possible.

Reuters Exclusive: Putin wants Ukraine ceasefire on current frontlines

MOSCOW/LONDON, May 24 (Reuters) – Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to halt the war in Ukraine with a negotiated ceasefire that recognises the current battlefield lines, four Russian sources told Reuters

Freezing the conflict along current lines would leave Russia in possession of substantial chunks of four Ukrainian regions he formally incorporated into Russia in September 2022, but without full control of any of them. Such an arrangement would fall short of the goals Moscow set for itself at the time.

  7. Beyond gibberish. Trump yesterday at Bronx rally:

“I was sort of like a hot guy. I was hot as a pistol. I think I was hotter than I am now and I became president. Okay. I don’t know. I said to somebody, was I hotter before or hotter now? I don’t know”

  8. craig, he probably means the usual slang def according to fluentslang.com:

    What Does Hot Mean?
The term hot is slang used to describe someone who is physically attractive. It is often used to refer to individuals who are conventionally good-looking and well-endowed. Other slang terms used to describe attractive people include hottie, foxy, babe, snacc, and rocket. The origin of the term hot as slang for attractiveness is unclear, but it has been in use for many years. It is commonly used in casual conversations, particularly among young people. The term is not an acronym or an abbreviation for anything; it simply refers to someone who is considered attractive. It’s important to note that the term hot does not have a sexual connotation in this context. It is solely used to describe someone’s physical appearance. It is not a typo or a typing error, and it is not an offensive term. However, it is always important to use slang terms with caution and be aware of the context in which they are used.

could be tho’ he’s using the show biz version of being big on broadway/tv etc.  certainly unthinkable sexually, but then he is thought to be a narcissist in the nth degree.

  10. George Conway Taunts Trump With Bruising Billboard In ‘Perfect Location’ | HuffPost Latest News

George Conway is sending a withering message to Donald Trump in the former president’s own backyard.
The conservative attorney has paid for an anti-Trump message to be placed on a billboard near the former president’s Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach, Florida. It reads: “Vote for Joe, Not the Psycho.”
“So, just for kicks, I put up a billboard a few miles south of Palm Beach on I-95 South, perfect for anyone happening to travel from Mar-a-Lago to Doral to, say, play golf,” Conway wrote on X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday.
Conway, a fierce critic of Trump, did it “on a lark,” he told MSNBC’s Chris Hayes. The slogan already features on blue and white bumper stickers and hats he has created, he explained.
“I thought about putting it up at the Holland Tunnel or the Lincoln Tunnel but it turns out he’s not going to Bedminster this summer, some reporters tell me, because the campaign is going to be run out of an office near West Palm Beach Airport,” said Conway, who announced his divorce from former Trump White House counselor Kellyanne Conway last year.
“So, this was the perfect location,” the lawyer added. “And I hope he sees it and I hope it amuses him as much as it amuses me.”

  11. RR – I wonder how many Repugz will be surprised when they lose elections from tippy-top of the ballot and all the way down?   They haven’t hitched themselves to the wrong wagon.  They’re being willingly dragged by garbage truck.
