  1. guess that was what jason miller meant the other day about the event when he said “it’s going to be a very professional, very buttoned-up announcement.”

that crowd wouldn’t know “professional” when they saw it.

Nasa’s Artemis 1, most powerful rocket in history, blasts off to moon | Nasa | The Guardian

Two hurricanes, two months and a number of technical fixes since previous launch attempts were thwarted, Nasa’s Artemis 1, the most powerful space rocket in history, is finally on course for the moon after lifting off from Florida early on Wednesday.

The spacecraft, comprising the mighty Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and pioneering Orion capsule, lit the night sky as it rose from its Cape Canaveral launchpad. The 25-day, 1.3m-mile journey to the moon and back is Nasa’s first crew-capable deep-space mission for half a century.

No astronauts are aboard the Artemis 1 test flight, three mannequins and a Snoopy soft toy gauging radiation levels and testing new life-preservation systems and equipment designed for the next generation of long-duration human spaceflight.

But success of the mission, which will culminate in a Pacific ocean splashdown on 11 December, is crucial to the Artemis 2 and 3 flights that will follow. Both will ferry humans to and from the moon, with the latter, scheduled for 2025 but expected to slip back a year, being the first crewed lunar landing since Apollo 17 in December 1972.

    […]

Orion launched atop the most powerful rocket ever built, with 8.8 million pounds of thrust, 1.3 million greater than the Saturn V behemoths of the Apollo era.

Artemis will fly farther than any spacecraft built for humans, Nasa says. It will travel 280,000 miles (450,000km) from Earth, and 40,000 miles (64,000km) beyond the far side of the moon.

Orion will also stay in space longer than any human spacecraft has without docking to a space station, and return home faster and hotter than ever before.

  3. here’s to all on the trail who’ve been one of those legislative aides Jon was talking about. at last some kind words of appreciation for those hard-working days and long, long nights just to accomplish a correctly placed comma and a “shall” instead of a “may”.

  4. back to the thread topic, but only if we have to

The final votes for last week’s midterm elections are still being counted but the race for 2024 has already begun, Donald Trump made a big announcement tonight at Mar-a-Lago surrounded by dozens of his closest friends and thousands of classified documents, Trump is expected to launch another campaign for President, many Republicans are moving to distance themselves from Trump, January 6th “stop the stealer” Ali Alexander was invited to attend Trump’s announcement speech, Mike Pence released his mildly-anticipated memoir and shed light on what went down on January 6th, Trump Worshiper Kari Lake has been defeated in the race for Governor in Arizona, we are all still trying to figure out what Herschel Walker is saying, and our very own Guillermo was honored by the Critics’ Choice Association for their Celebration of Latino Cinema and Television.

  5. huffpo

On Tuesday night, Stephen Colbert said Trump’s announcement happened to coincide with National Recycling Day, “which is why we’re recycling a piece of trash we threw out two years ago.”
Colbert also noted that Trump had been sharing memes on his flailing Truth Social platform, including one asking: “Why would a billionaire who has it all, fame, fortune, a warm and loving family, friends, etc. want to endanger himself… by becoming POTUS?”
The host of the “Late Show” was ready with an answer.
“’Cuz he’s on the run from the law?” Colbert shot back.

  7. T**** got the crowd as roused up as any washed up septuagenarian performer gets any middle aged crowd dressed up in their best suits and dresses roused up. It looked like a casino dinner show without the dinner. The crowd only put their hands together to take pics with their cell phones. When the bored crowd tried to leave while he droned on security wouldn’t let them so that it didn’t look like the bored crowd filtered out before  Dumbass was finished entertaining himself.

    • Ivanka Trump, a former White House official, said on Instagram, as her dad announced his third run for president:

I love my father very much.

This time around, I am choosing to prioritize my young children and the private life we are creating as a family.

I do not plan to be involved in politics. While I will always love and support my father, going forward I will do so outside the political arena.

I am grateful to have had the honor of serving the American people and I will always be proud of many of our Administration’s accomplishments.

  13. Not being an economist I cannot put the stamp of “this be real” on my next statements, but, being a yo-yo in the middle of nowhere makes me an expert in something.  I am seeing some big clearance sales in certain electronics going on.  Like all the orders from the last two years just showed up in containers and there is no more room in the warehouse type sales. I am also thinking the fed rate hikes hit hard and people stopped buying faster then expected.  Much is being sold under the guise of “Black Friday”, just weeks earlier than the actual Friday.  On top of that I am seeing sales by the manufacturer, or brand online store, matching or beating sales prices from retail.

“House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy won his party’s nomination for House Speaker, but not without some pushback from Texas conservatives.”

“Roy called for delaying leadership elections until Republicans knew how big their majority in the House would be. Several races remain uncalled Tuesday, and a slimmer majority would require a more aggressive whipping operation to maintain party discipline.”

  21. the hill:

David Cicilline (D-R.I.) is eyeing legislation that would bar former President Trump from serving in office under the 14th Amendment “for leading an insurrection against the United States.”
Cicilline, who served as an impeachment manager during Trump’s first impeachment, sent a letter to his Democratic colleagues Tuesday night previewing a bill to prevent Trump from holding office and soliciting co-sponsors for the measure.
It is unclear when the congressman plans to introduce the bill. The listed deadline for lawmakers to co-sponsor the measure is Thursday at noon.
The Rhode Island Democrat circulated the letter the same night Trump announced his 2024 campaign for president.
“Given the proof – demonstrated through the January 6th Committee Hearings, the 2021 impeachment trial, and other reporting – that Donald Trump engaged in insurrection on January 6th with the intention of overturning the lawful 2020 election results, I have drafted legislation that would prevent Donald Trump from holding public office again under the Fourteenth Amendment,” Cicilline wrote.
    […]
Cicilline argued that Trump should be barred from holding office under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, known as the “Disqualification Clause,” which says individuals should not be allowed “to hold any office” if they “engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.”
The congressman said his bill “details testimony and evidence demonstrating how Donald Trump engaged in insurrection against the United States,” pointing to revelations from Jan. 6 select committee hearings.

“It specifically details how Donald Trump engaged in insurrection when he helped to plan and encouraged the insurgence on January 6th despite knowing that the election results were lawful; attempted to intimidate state and federal officials when they did not support his false claims and unlawful plans; tried to manipulate Mike Pence into unlawfully refusing to certify the election results, despite Mr. Pence’s and legal advisors’ assertion that he held no such authority; and supported the violent insurrection at the Capitol on January 6th, refusing for hours to denounce or act against the mob and putting thousands of lives in danger,” the letter reads.[continues]

  22. Schumer got it done. Twelve Senate Republicans just joined Democrats to advance the Respect for Marriage Act, which would codify protections for same-sex and interracial marriage.

  23. The good people who said go slow on blame for the big boom in Poland were right.  I suspect a few of them had seen the remains of the rocket, which appeared to be an old Soviet thing.  Something the Ukraine military had from decades ago.  Even though Ukraine has denied ownership, they want to examine it first, What this episode points out is the Ukraine missile/rocket defense system is way out of date.  They need a much better system.  I hope the people sitting in the WH decide to get them one.

  24. https://thehill.com/homenews/house/3738289-house-democrat-eyes-legislation-to-bar-trump-from-office-under-14th-amendment/

“House Democrat eyes legislation to bar Trump from office under 14th Amendment — Section 3 does not expressly provide a procedure for its implementation other than Section 5’s general authority of Congress ‘to enforce [the Fourteenth Amendment’ by appropriate legislation,’” it adds.

I think they could get enough Repugz on board.

  25. https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/16/health/abortion-texas-sepsis/index.html

“Finally, Amanda was sick enough that the doctors felt legally safe to terminate the pregnancy, she said.

But Amanda was so sick that antibiotics wouldn’t stop the bacterial infection raging through her body. A blood transfusion didn’t cure her, either.

Sepsis, the body’s extreme response to an infection, is a life-threatening medical emergency.

Amanda’s blood pressure plummeted. Her platelets dropped.

Doctors inserted an intravenous line near her heart to deliver antibiotics and medication to stabilize her blood pressure.

But her medical ordeal isn’t over.

Amanda’s uterus suffered scarring from the infection, and she may not be able to have more children. She had a surgery recently to fix the scarring, but it’s unclear whether it will be successful.”

If Republicans are so worried about abortion being used as birth control, then make actual birth control methods free and widely available, and keep abortion legal.
