Sunday Serendipity

The bassoon is not an instrument I think of often and had never heard one doing a solo but Vivaldi wrote 39 concertos for the bassoon. I ran across this performance on youtube , with it’s fun and lively sound is perfect for a festive occasion, much better than most thanksgiving music.

I wasn’t able to find much information about the concerto but did run across this bit of information

Many consider the Concerto for Bassoon in E Minor (RV 484) to be one of Vivaldi’s most successful concertos. The opening Allegro poco draws inspiration from the only surviving movement of the Concerto for Flute RV 432. The Andante is languorous; the outer movements vigorous and intense, most notably the final Allegro with its irresistible and unmistakeable Vivaldian élan.

The performance is a national school competition in Poland which may add to the liveliness of the performance.

Enjoy, Jack

  1. jack, a wonderfully sprightly alternative to what we usually hear coming out of that instrument.

the grandfather portrayal by a bassoon was my first introduction to it when a child. since then i’ve become very respectful of its emotional range and complexity.

BTW, here’s a neat clip by brodas bros of an actor mimicking peter’s grandpa while bassoonist plays.

  2.  here’s another side of the bassoon which next to the oboe must be the hardest instrument on the lungs ever created.  youthful attempts on my part always left me dizzy, close to fainting and my hat goes off to those who have mastered it.

  3. Over men and horses, hoops and garters, lastly thru a hog’s head of real fire.
In this way Mr T will challenge the world.

  4. Jack,  Great selection.  Definitely different and fun

Patd the dancing gradpa was a nice addition.

I had never heard this version of Peter and the Wolf narrated by David Bowie.  Adds a flavor milder than the original Sterling Holloway

  5. And of course Henry the horse dances the waltz…
OK, so what has the Dumbass battle cry morphed through?
     1. Stop the vote – except in Arizona
    2. Stop the count
    3. Count all the legal votes, throw out all the illegal votes
    4. Overturn the votes

  6. A beautiful baby and a beautiful, musical selection.  Guys, You are two for two this weekend.

  7. He and the gop did their dead level best to prosecute prominent democrats.  The cases simply were not there.  But he tried.   And he would have absolutely locked them up if it  had been at all possible.   Undercuts the arguments against prosecuting him.

  8. so does he think by becoming a candidate for prez it will give him the same DOJ immunity that being prez did?   i wonder if barr has told him that just to get him off the concession dime. and/or is this new plan just another scam to rip off $$ from his devotees?

In private huddles and phone conversations, however, Trump has been discussing an entirely different next act: another presidential run in 2024.

In a nod to the reality that he is destined to leave office in January, the president is seriously contemplating life beyond the White House, telling advisers that he wants to remain an omnipresent force in politics and the media — perhaps by running for the White House again.

Trump has told confidants he could announce a 2024 campaign before the end of this year, which would immediately set up a potential rematch with President-elect Joe Biden.

Trump also has been exploring ways to make money for relatively little work, such as giving paid speeches to corporate groups or selling tickets to rallies. In addition, he may try to write a score-settling memoir of his time as president and appear on television, in a paid or unpaid capacity.

  9. My cousin played the oboe and bassoon. She went to the High School for performing arts in nyc and then to oberlin.  She became a producer

  10. Alan Dershowitz on FOX just now: “If you’re betting money you can’t afford to lose, you have to bet that the outcome of the election will not be reversed.”

  11. You never want to be in the position where someone looks at you and says, “Are you this stupid? Or do you think I’m this stupid?” Especially when they are the judge.

  12. The important words in the decision are “with prejudice”.  Which means no retries to revive it.  I have seen a few other decisions which were written to allow a retry.

  13. I suggest SFB take a tip from the MAGAt rally in GA.  “Walk away.”
His ego will never allow him to face reality, so walk away like a whiny toddler and claim America done ya wrong.  Then, fly away to a country with no extradition treaty with the US, and, take your evil spawn with you.

  14. @GovChristie says it’s time for President to accept that Biden has won, calls Trump legal defense “a national embarrassment” @ThisWeekABC

Christie: “I have been a supporter of the president’s. I voted for him twice. But elections have consequences & we cannot continue to act as if something happened here that didn’t happen.” He says an unwillingness to present evidence “must mean the evidence doesn’t exist.”

  15. Jack….  wonderful!…  and I love that the conductor is a woman.
I’m feeling very relaxed about the election outcome right now.

  16. Trump supporter Geraldo Rivera just now on FOX, urges President to concede: “I want him to show grace and good manners and honor the traditions. The election of 2020 is lost.”

  17. raw story:

Far-right attorney L. Lin Wood, who represents right-wing accused murderer Kyle Rittenhouse and President Donald Trump, threatened on Saturday to sit out the two runoff elections in Georgia that will decide control of the U.S. Senate.
“Let’s speak truth about Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-GA) and Sen. David Perdue (R-GA),” Wood wrote, referring to the two Republican nominees in the January runoffs.
“Why are they doing little or nothing to support efforts by GA citizens to address unlawful election and need for Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) to order special session of the legislature?” Wood asked, falsely claiming that Trump won Georgia, when in reality, the Peach State was won by President-elect Joe Biden.
“If not fixed, I will not vote in the GA runoff,” he threatened. “Will you?”

  18. He got to the Michigan representatives who went to the wh……of course he did…..
Now they’re going to see if they can gum up the works.    They were also carousing in that DC hotel into the wee hours, quaffing tubs of high-dollar champagne.
    Polecats.  Michigan polecats.

  19. Ooooo……..a little bar and italics……I like that……I wonder how I did it…..

  20. it was noted earlier today by tapper that hogan’s dad was the 1st republican to call for nixon impeachment and got a lot of backlash from his party about it.  gov hogan seemed moved that jake mentioned that, he spoke well of biden & gov meeting and went on to be even more hard on d’ump to concede and start the transition.

  21. You know how all those evangelical preachers get out there and pray themselves into an ecstatic frenzy, but the REAL deal is that they are raking in wash tubs full of currency.    And the rubes NEVER get it.   That’s a big problem.   Whose idea was it not to tax churches, anyway.   That was just plain stupid.

  22. Ooooo……..a little bar and italics……I like that……I wonder how I did it…..………….

…that’s the “quotation” function in the post-creation toolbar

  23. New Fox News  promo  running on the their NFL broadcast  today.
    New tag line –

    Fox News
    The Voices America Trusts

    Gobbles would be proud .

  24. Been watching the Rise of the Naizs on PBS ?
This week  will be real crazy , the Murder of Ernst Rohm, as Goering and Himmler team-up for the first time to smash the “Brown Shirts”.
    Some real nasty stuff.

  25. Just how  crazy is it  ?
Crazy by it’s very nature ,  has a tendency  eat any yardstick that get’s near it.
So measurements are both risky, and inaccurate from the get go.  But here’s one that tests  it never the less.
The Wisconsin AR-i5 shooter , Rittenhouse was  released on $2M bond.
He was warmly met  by the “My Pillow Guy”, and  “Little Newt” from “Lonesome Dove”.

  26. This moves Willy Nelson’s masterpiece “Barbarosa”  up to #1.
Like all the great one’s it has an excllent sound track.

  27. It is a great story , packed with truths about the history of Texas, and our human condition.  And shot where the story takes place, with real romance.
    Barbarosa –
“Well the Mexicans got a sayin’ ………. That which cannot be remedied , must be endured”

  28. Not sure of the time and if it will be on cable or just C-SPAN but Emily Murphy faces Congresswoman Katie Porter and other House members tomorrow to explain why she is illegally blocking the Biden Transition.

  29. Great, I’m going to watch a movie on my telephone.  If that ain’t wild I don’t know what is…..

  30. I love Katie Porter.  What/who is Erin Murphy afraid of and why isn’t she doing her job??? I’d love to see her crack during questioning.

  31. He sort of fired Crazy Lady Powell. He said she was never a part of it officially

  32. Old Man now re-watching Barbarosa

Noted Gilbert Roland was in the cast which reminded me of another old blog I wrote The Likes of Gilbert Roland.

It is so old, that it kept the article but lost the video connected to it at one time.  So here is The South Coast of Texas

  33. Will it end in a bunker for tRUMPsky, too?  He seems more enamored of himself than afraid of negative consequences (with which he has no experience).

Tedious is trying to politicize Thanksgiving spreader events.
    Ted Cruz hates American families.

See, that’s the response these Republican asshats need.  Call them out.
Stay home now so you can have family time in the future.  Even my Republican relatives in CA have said they are all staying home and doing their own thing. They are speaking to me, again.   Got a call from one and a card from another one.

  34. Stimulus money, Mitch!  Americans and small businesses need stimulus money.
No money now, means no Christmas. Why do Republicans hate Christmas?

  35. We all know  this date  here, and what it did to our country.
I was in the that hormone  fueled place know as the 8th grade. It was a Friday , and really big day at O.L. Slaton Jr. High, and for me as well.    The “Veleteens”  were to play an assembly after lunch , and that night there was a party at Viki Bowman’s.  And I had my first real date to it, with Marilyn Miller.  A cheer leader.
She had already installed  a ring in my nose to lead me around.
We got the news , just after Walter’s  calling it,  there was no “Veleteens” , and no party.
So that is how I spent this day 57 years ago,
No president I loved ,  No electric guitars I loved. And no wool sweater with a Big “S”  I loved.
The next night Vicki Bowman had her party.  And I spent some time in a closet with Ms. Miller  adjusting  my nose ring.
The next day , I got up and watched Lee Harvey  get shot on Live TV in the Dallas Police Station.
Crazy by it’s very nature ,  has a tendency  eat any yardstick that get’s near it.

  36. Yep, Craig, Trump is hitting the wall!

  37. Jamie,
It’s beautiful film.  getting Roland was genius,  in that part.

  38. Haha, they threw Sidney under the bus. Umm, when you’re too crazy for the Trump QAnon crowd, well.

  39. Kevin Rudd.
Former Aussie PM   is leading  a petition drive  to open a “Royal Court”
To investigate why  Rupert  controls  70% of Australian meda , and 100 % of Queensland media . It is the largest online  petition  in the history of Australia.
Amanphor  on PBS 3 nights ago.

  40. History teaches one  lesson  when  the old order crashes.  In the rubble, are the ways forward.  And the living find them and go forward.
This is rewiring  a lot of kids  to make a better world.
And they , and  not “Mr, Pillow”. , will over come.

  41. There over 70 Million people in this  country  that long for a world that is dead as Gen, Grant.  We cannot  fight them , we must seduce  them.  Go talk to them. , win them with ideas. one block at a time.

  42. I recently heard that Abe Lincoln said something that seems counter-intuitive to me.   If you don’t like someone, you should get to know them.  I don’t want to know the idiots who crowd-funded bail for that Rittenhaus bastard. I know enough about the idiot rep from FL who wants the murderous creep to run for office.

  43. My bet , it’s going to be  called “Black Kettle”
A very old sad  story being changed at last.

  44. The upcoming  purge on the right  will be bloody .
That “hot mess”  is about to leave its flaming dumpster.
There will be  a lot of dead GOP sheep

  45. Forget Joe  geeting to the WH.
The GOP is about to eat it’s   self  to pieces.  And that is good for America,  their race to the bottom  leads us here.
