Our Dayafter Critiques, Ratings Reviews and other Hangover Complaints on Dueling Townhalls

According to Trail Mixer X-republican:
Biden Beats trump in Ratings
Biden won “the ratings battle” by an astonishing 7 – 2*, proving that Low Key is less boring than Boring Boar is.
A tiny victory for a man, a lopsided rout for Humankind !

  1. Sounds like I could have watched the VP and gotten a nice sleep.  That would have been good considering that the animals woke me up at 0130 to let me know they love me.  Sigh.
After scanning a few of the reviews it was obvious that Biden was the favorite for most people.

  2. newsweek via msn:

President Donald Trump’s town hall event was “president vs. Guthrie” and Democratic nominee Joe Biden’s was Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, according to critics.

  3. When WaPo Fact Check uses words like hallucinations to describe the “facts” cited by D’ump I don’t have to watch every minute of that town hall – it does make me curious though. I caught a few minutes during the extended ABC commercial breaks and a few clips on MSNBC and agree with two things I’ve heard. 1. Whatever world Trump thinks he sees around him is one only he can see and 2. Savannah Guthrie had D’umbass for dessert last night. I hope she had a large bicarb of soda before she went to bed.

  4. We’re all moving to President  Joe Biden’s town.
I wanna throw things when I hear tRUMPsky’s voice.    I must not be the only one, as there’s an ad that runs here with no voiceover from anyone, except SFB approving the message at the end.   It’s still all lies, because it’s tied to tRUMP.
I did see a still shot from NBC’s town hall.  Not enough orange spackle to cover his giant head.   You know what?  Steroids will make your head bigger.

  5. BiD, were you the genius that came up with the “orange frosted fruitcake” nickname for D’ump?

brilliant!   kudos to you or to whoever thought that up.

  6. So this is what they meant by St George and the Dragon.

    Dramatis Personae:
    St George
    The Dragon

  7. daily beast in re mr rogers comparison:

On one channel, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. On the other, a rerun of Celebrity Deathmatch. Or, at least, that’s how it felt.
The level of energy in Biden’s town hall was like a rip in the space-time continuum that transported the viewer to an Al Gore presidency, where every response was given in exhaustive detail and every question was asked without a quick Google to see if the answer might just be on the Biden campaign website.
But beyond the aspects of the appearance that reminded viewers of an uncanned stump speech—regular anecdotes about his childhood in Claymont, Delaware, where “you either became a cop, a firefighter or a priest,” were peppered throughout the evening—were the parts where Biden seemed to genuinely care if the person he was addressing felt heard, regardless of whether, as in Trump’s town hall, they were subtly hitting on him.
Even when faced with the prospect of losing the race—his third for the White House, and likely the last major campaign of a 47-year career in politics—Biden reacted with a calm that seemed almost alien to viewers who had switched from NBC to ABC.
“It could say that I’m a lousy candidate and I didn’t do a good job,” Biden said, asked what a loss would mean for him and the country. “But I hope that it doesn’t say that we are as racially, ethnically and religiously at odds with one another as it appears, as the president wants us to be.”
Over on NBC, President Trump was busy doing a kinder, gentler impression of his usual self. Still, it included some of the same excesses.
When asked about his promotion on Twitter of the batshit conspiracy theory that Biden had SEAL Team Six murdered, Trump said, “That was a retweet. That was an opinion of somebody, and that was a retweet. I’ll put it out there. People can decide.”
That answer baffled Guthrie. “I don’t get that. You’re the president—you’re not, like, someone’s crazy uncle who can just retweet whatever!”
For those used to the battery of “what the fuck?” reactions to events headlined by Trump, transitioning to Biden’s 90-minute town hall was borderline jarring. There were no new policies pulled out of thin air and in contradiction with opinions stated only days ago; interrogatives from host George Stephanopoulos were answered with aplomb rather than outrage; at no point did Biden semi-endorse a death cult.
The Trump campaign appeared flummoxed at how to spin what they had been hoping would be a humiliating defeat for Biden in the race for ratings.
“Feels like I am watching an episode of Mister Rodgers [sic] Neighborhood,” summed up Trump campaign adviser Mercedes Schlapp midway through the dueling town halls. To Schlapp’s credit, there was a gauzy softness to the event that might bring to mind the Neighborhood of Make-Believe rather than the usual Trumpian apocalyptic predictions for the suburbs in a post-Trump era where cardigan sweaters are set aflame with reckless abandon.
Still, to various players and operatives in Trumpworld, the president still managed to dramatically improve his public messaging compared to his widely panned (including among his close advisers) performance in the first Trump-Biden debate. Granted, that was setting the bar through the floor.
“He didn’t spend the whole time yelling, he didn’t piss himself… so this was as best as we could have hoped for,” said one Trump campaign adviser. “After the last debate, that is an improvement.”

  8. “He didn’t spend the whole time yelling, he didn’t piss himself… so this was as best as we could have hoped for,” said one Trump campaign adviser.

    possible bumper sticker material?

  13. From Newsweek
Town Hall YouTube Views Suggest Biden hit Trump Where It Hurts Him Most—Ratings

At the end of Trump’s town hall, the NBC News YouTube channel showed 153,660 viewers were watching. ABC News’s YouTube channel showed 507,445 viewers at the end of Biden’s town hall.

  14. The bits I saw from D’umpy’s “performance” last night and the thought of a second term (remote though that might be now) bring to mind the Beatles’ Not a Second Time.

You’re giving me the same old line
    I’m wondering why
    You hurt me then
    You’re back again
No, no, no, not a second time

    No, no, no…

  15. From WaPo coverage of the dumpster fire on NBC last night:

The president showed on Thursday that he’s not going to change anything. He will rise or fall with the style that got him to the White House in 2016.

    See my 9:13 am comment.

  16. Watching clips of Trump’s ridiculous lies and lame dodges in last night’s town hall it’s even more clear he thinks all voters are as stupid as his gullible supporters are.

  17. Latest national polls via @CNN:

    NPR/Marist: Biden +11

    Kaiser Fam: Biden +11

    UM Lowell: Biden +10

    NBC/WSJ: Biden +11

    ABC/Post: Biden +12

    Pew Rsrch: Biden +10

    Fox News: Biden +10

    Ipsos/Reut: Biden +12

  18. I do want to be clear – I’ve never cared much for Savannah Guthrie’s interviews on the Today Show and accordingly had very low expectations.  After seeing some of the exchanges I want to congratulate her – she did a very good job of calling him out on his lies and leaving him flummoxed and babbling.  Yes, yes he babbles all the time but he seldom seems flummoxed.  She got him there.

  19. Watched Biden…  not one second of trump…   I’m so over him.  Nice reading all the reviews here and other places on the internets.  I’d put good money down on that trump won’t do another debate with Biden…  nor will he do another town hall.  He’s too chickenshit!
Yeah….  kudos to NBC for taking all that flak and coming out a winner!

  20. Renee, I’m of the opposite opinion regarding D’ump doing another debate with Biden.  I think he’s itching to do it.  He thinks the first one went very well, at least he says he thought it did.  I think he loves to be in a position to bully and interrupt a nice guy – makes him feel like he’s strong and thinks that’s what a debate is about.

  21. cbs news:

Republican Senator Ben Sasse slammed President Trump’s behavior in a town hall with constituents this week,…
A spokesperson for Sasse confirmed to CBS News that the senator had made these comments, which were first reported by the Washington Examiner.
“I don’t think the way he’s lead through COVID has been reasonable or responsible, or right,” Sasse said.
Sasse continued that Mr. Trump “kisses dictators’ butts,” citing how the president “ignores that the Uighurs are in literal concentration camps in Xinjiang” and “hasn’t lifted a finger on behalf of the Hong-Kongers.”
“The United States now regularly sells out our allies under his leadership, the way he treats women, spends like a drunken sailor. The ways I criticize President Obama for that kind of spending; I’ve criticized President Trump for as well. He mocks evangelicals behind closed doors. His family has treated the presidency like a business opportunity. He’s flirted with white supremacists,” Sasse said.

but, Ben, aside from that what do you really think about him?

  22. NYTimes

    The Case Against Donald Trump
Donald Trump’s re-election campaign poses the greatest threat to American democracy since World War II.
Mr. Trump’s ruinous tenure already has gravely damaged the United States at home and around the world. He has abused the power of his office and denied the legitimacy of his political opponents, shattering the norms that have bound the nation together for generations. He has subsumed the public interest to the profitability of his business and political interests. He has shown a breathtaking disregard for the lives and liberties of Americans. He is a man unworthy of the office he holds.

  23. I was not able to find an ABC station on my multi-million-channel system. I watched dumb shit on MSNBC. He matched our expectations. I shall vote for the Dynamic Democratic Duo on the 3rd.

  24. have a feeling LP is gonna get some heat over that one.

  27. craig, they’re not the only ones who think he’ll lose

    business insider via msn:

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell won’t risk his position by forcing through a stimulus bill now, because he expects President Donald Trump to lose next month’s election, Ian Shepherdson, the chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, said in a webinar on Thursday.
“I think McConnell expects Trump to lose, and therefore, for him to spend political capital to support Trump by forcing through a bill which would put his own leadership position at risk after the election, to me, doesn’t make any sense,” Shepherdson said.
“It’s always wise to do things from McConnell’s personal perspective, because that’s how things operate in the Senate. He has enormous personal power, and he wants to be leader again, even if he has to be a leader in the minority,” he said, alluding to the potential that Democrats could win a majority in the Senate next month.

  28. Some good reading this morning.
From propublica, about Trump destroying one of our great institutions, The CDC.
From the New York Times, How originalists concentrate on the founding fathers intent but ignore the intent those who added to the constitution with amendments. He is mostly talking about the post civil war amendments , the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments.
An inspiring story from The Washingtonian

Ducklo is the national press secretary and a top spokesperson for Joe Biden. If Biden becomes the 46th President, there’s a decent chance Ducklo will figure in the White House press shop, occupying one of the most powerful perches in Washington. Thirty-two years old and trim, he wears tortoiseshell glasses and is partial to blazers with dress shirts, no tie. If you ran into him at happy hour, he’d blend right into the sea of young media operatives populating the city, a disciplined press aide who aims never to become the story himself. But for one significant difference: A month before the Iowa debate, Ducklo was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. By the time doctors discovered it, the disease had spread to his liver, his gallbladder, and his bones.

    Enjoy, Jack

  29. Hm, maybe i’ll put on my game-face and see what’s going on at my polling place, feeling left-out.

  30. Amy Coney Island should remember SFB’s other picks include a drunk rapist and entitled white guy who thinks his white skin and genitalia makes him special

  31. The election results will be known on election night.    The icky states that will be slow won’t make a difference
Biden is going to crush trumpy and there will be no court cases. Bully Barr has signaled he can only go so far.
Media is populated with lazy people who read a headline and use it without bothering fact check

  35. With Planet, The Atlantic aims to unleash its entire newsroom on climate journalism
“There’s a fair amount of climate coverage that is like a commuter leaning on their horn, in a traffic jam. It’s very loud. It tells everyone around them something they already knew. And, at the end of the day, nobody’s moved anywhere.”

With Planet, The Atlantic aims to unleash its entire newsroom on climate journalism

The Atlantic launched Planet, a vertical and newsletter dedicated to climate journalism,n Thursday, calling the issue an “everything story.” The new section will serve as a guide to living through climate change, one that The Atlantic hopes ca on help readers make decisions about what to pay attention to when it feels like the whole world is on fire.
Like The Atlantic’s pandemic coverage, Planet won’t rely on a beat reporter or two; it’ll be a newsroom-wide effort that brings in writers across disciplines and sections. The 163-year-old magazine has earned manymany new subscribers during Covid-19 and the writers and editors who developed Planet say the time is right to bring an all-hands-on-deck approach to climate journalism.

  36. Poobah, that Axios piece you linked has Stepien’s 3 paths to 270 for D’ump.  2 of them require him to win Michigan and 1 to win Pennsylvania, where RCP has Biden at 6.7 & 5.7 respectively.  It is only Trafalgar and Insider Advantage polls that hold his polling average down in PA and Trafalgar in MI – without them the RCP numbers are 7.25 in PA and 8.2 in MI. 538 rates Trafalgar at C- and doesn’t even include IA.  538 has Biden at 7.5 in  MI and 6.9 in PA.  I don’t remove pollsters from the 538 calculus because they weight results based on pollster ratings.

  37. Looking at this article from WaPo, I’d say Biden needs to turn some of that $383M to Facebook ads in the states he has to have.

After recent surge, Trump is outpacing Biden on Facebook ad buys in battleground states
Joe Biden’s presidential campaign had a hidden advantage from August to mid-September: It was outspending President Trump’s campaign on Facebook ads tailored to persuade battleground-state voters.
But the president’s campaign began ramping up and is now spending more on battleground-state ad buys on the platform, which was a key part of his strategy in 2016. It funded an estimated $794,000 per day as October began on ads to convince wavering voters and to turn out his base in several states key to his 2016 victory.
Democratic nominee Biden spent about $621,000 per day on those types of ads in the same time period.
That’s according to an analysis for The Washington Post of Facebook ad data published by the platform and provided by the New York University Online Political Transparency Project. The analysis looked specifically at paid ads targeted disproportionately to swing states, presumably to win votes, and did not include ads with broader reach, such as nationwide appeals for donations or email addresses. It also shows the voting blocs they’re both targeting, including seniors and Hispanic voters.
Both campaigns are duking it out in key states, with Trump recently upping his Facebook persuasion effort in Florida and Biden doubling down on Pennsylvania.
Biden has clearly widened the electoral map. Flush with cash frommotivated Democratic donors, his campaign is running Facebook ads in several states Trump won in 2016. He began spending an estimated $30,000 per day on vote-oriented ads around mid-September to contest the formerly deep-red state of Georgia. The Trump campaign then began spending about $60,000 per day.
And on  and on it goes.

As much as I detest Facebook, it reaches people who don’t go there for political persuasion.

  38. yup Jack, these people don’t magically get smarter if trump loses.

Actually, i expect a post-trump GOP to get even goofier under the likes of Paul, Cotton, and the rest of the gang.

  39. So the White House was warned that the Ghouliani was being played by the Russians to provide disinformation to the D’umpster reelection campaign.  As if they cared about the truth behind what Trudy was selling.  Sheds a different light on the supposed emails (scrubbed of metadata) that the computer guy supposedly got from Hunter Biden’s computer.

  40. The trumpity crime family continues on…there’s the Ghouliani thing and Mrs. Crime Family or the whole family is sueing the author of “Melania & Me,” and one wonders i\who knows this guy,

Robert T. Brockman, a reclusive Houston software billionaire, was charged with using a web of Caribbean entities to hide $2 billion in income in what prosecutors called the largest U.S. tax case ever against an individual.

From The Houston Chronicle.  Interesting how he tried to hide his income electronically for tax evasion purposes.

  41. 300% Growth  in 9 years –

In 2019, wind-powered generation contributed 84.4 thousand gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity in Texas, an 11% increase from the 75.7 thousand GWh generated in 2018. Substantial growth in wind capacity in the state was the primary reason for this increase. Texas wind capacity rose almost 17% in 2019, from 24.1 gigawatts (GW) in 2018 to 28.1 GW in 2019. Wind power accounted for 18% of the electricity generated in Texas in 2019, compared with 6% in 2010.

  43. Ok i voted.
First time i had to wait in line since Bush v. Kerry.  What an awful night that was.

  44. I just heard that trumpity may be black mailing Lindsay Graham. Hadn’t thought of that angle.  I though Graham, Moscow Mitch, etc. night be black mailed by Russia.

  45. Notes about fossil fuel production in the U.S.  Many Gulf of Mexico platforms are still shut in, not producing oil.  There is still over capacity in the oil production so that is a problem if you do not like low gasoline prices.  Wind energy production in Texas keeps increasing with the resulting decrease in oil-gas use for energy.
I think it is prudent to keep in our rational minds that SFB is off his rocker.  He lives in some alternative universe.  The greedy old perverts want to keep him in place because he will do what they want him to do.  Kill Social Security, destroy health care and especially American democracy.  The guy does not understand or appreciate our universe.  His sky is not blue, more like a deep thick brown.  Every tell all book you read is that he cannot comprehend our universe.  He is a figure head, not a president.  The trumpists think it is a fun game, put the idiot out on display and then strip the treasury and our savings while the media is trying to equivocate Biden to an imbecile.  If he were not so despicable one might, repeat that, might, feel sorry for the low intelligence fool.  But nope.  Not him.  When he roasts in hell the smell will drift all over the universe.  Hopefully his, not ours.

  46. patD – I don’t know who came up with “orange frosted fruitcake,” but it wasn’t me. I like fruitcake too much to make such a comparison.
Royce West is suffering from a bad case of sour grapes. He’s trying to poison the well of black voters and keep Cornyn in the Senate.  He’s an unethical creep, which is why he lost to MJ.     I hope folks are finishing their ballots and voting for Dems, now that you can’t vote straight party.  Yep.  They made it harder, dammit.

  47. snotter hawley (r MO) wants to communize Big Tech. He thinks he has a shot at the big time. Too bad for him that his party passed all those bills, making it easy for Big Tech to contribute YUUUUUJLEE to his primary opponent. HAHAHAHAHA

One thing about this election , America  is getting off the couch , and going to the polls .
Trump is in Macon, GA. tonight.
    Why is he in GA.?
Because  he’s losing.  To a creature so small , you need an electron microscope to see it, with no brain or central nervous system. In the end , he’s losing to something with no brain.

  49. Chris Christie says the virus hit him hard and quickly, 7 days in the hospital. Says he let his guard down & says everyone should wear a mask.
He called his doc and then checked himself into the hospital in Morristown.  He probably got platinum treatment like trumpity since he’s the former Gov of N.J.

  50. The one thing I missed was to buy cardboard manufacturers stock.
Off shoot of life, fantasy life that is – Just saw when Leroy Jethro Gibbs (NCIS tv show) enlisted in the Marines, 1976.  When he did that was a non-war year and he was not eligible for veterans benefits.  Part of the VA benefits is that you had to have served during certain wars or armed conflicts.  He stayed in the Marines and served in the Gulf War thereby getting VA benefits.  The TV series never shows him going to the VA or using any VA benefits.  I have had the unpleasant duty of informing people who had served in the U.S. military, but not during armed conflict, that they were not considered “veterans” under the law.  That has been pretty much changed as the U.S. has been in armed conflict since 2004.

  60. sasse’s attack on trump is mysterious. There’d be no reason to hurt trump cultist’s feelings unless his internal polling shows that trump is pulling him dangerously low. Therefore, I think sasse’s desperate.
Dems could add as many as 14 senate seats. I’ll predict a pickup of AZ, CO, IA, ME, NC & GA (warnock) and a hairline loss of AL, for a net gain of 5.
AK, MT, KS, NE, KY, TX, SC, GA (ossoff) and Jones in AL are also possible, but unlikely, wins.

I’m praying for a clean sweep.

  61. X=R, sasse may also just want some sort of redemption.  given that he might think it’s his last hurrah any way, he wants to be able to look in the mirror again.

  62. This is going to be the 2d worst beating of a sitting president in US history.
1912, with taft coming in 3d out of a field of 4, w/23% of the Popular vote and getting only 2 states and 8 E.C. votes out of 531 was the worst. And trump deserves that record much more than taft did.
