  1. bb,  and mexico is paying for the wall that’s keeping out all those pesky people who plant and pick the food we eat.

  2. a sample of some critiques and quotes in the guardian today about liz and bern:

Cenk Uygur, host and founder of the online news show The Young Turks, wrote in the Washington Post this week: “While Warren and Sanders draw thousands, his audiences are far smaller. His campaign is gasping for breath, and we’re only in August. The Biden fade has begun. I’m not sure he will even be in the race by Iowa.”
Uygur added: “This race now isn’t between Warren and Biden; it’s between Warren and Sanders. And for progressives, that’s a dream come true.”

    […]

Charles Chamberlain, chair of the progressive group Democracy for America, said: “She’s the big winner of the last eight months. We’ve seen her steadily climb among our members. It’s a well run, well executed campaign, clearly engaging with voters. But Bernie Sanders has also been campaigning hard – it’s been ‘steady as she goes’.
“Warren and Bernie have been dominating the debate; I feel like the Biden campaign is very much on the defensive when it comes to policy. The rallies for Biden are eerily reminiscent of the lacklustre campaign of Hillary Clinton. Warren and Bernie are going to event after event and just getting bigger.”
Chamberlain shares the view that Biden will fade.
“I think this is going to come down to a Democratic primary with Warren and Bernie at the top,” he said. “Neither should drop out. They need to fight this to the end, even if that means going to a convention where deals have to be made.”

  3. also about lizzie from the week:

As Warren rises to become one of the frontrunners in the 2020 Democratic primary, party rivals are reportedly looking to slow her ascent by pointing out that she was a Republican before 1996. But seeing as the Democratic Party is trying to play to disaffected Republicans sick of President Trump’s leadership, that’s not exactly a bad thing.
Warren was known as a conservative law professor throughout the 1980s and ’90s, calling government regulations a “tax” before going on to fight big business today, CNN reports. And now that she’s topping primary polls, three rival campaigns tell Politico they’re exploring that history for opposition research into Warren. One adviser suggested they’ve drawn up a brutal response in case Warren brings up a candidate’s record on a debate stage: “Nobody else here has been a Republican before.” Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-Vt.) top fan Susan Sarandon publicly used that line of thinking to attack Warren at a rally last week.

  4. bb, is this what you were alluding to?  from CNBC:

President Donald Trump on Friday said that tariffs on Chinese goods are still set to go into effect Sunday despite facing backlash from a number of companies.
The U.S. government will begin collecting 15% tariffs on $112 billion in Chinese imports starting Sept. 1.

  5. 7 1/8 American
First time I ever evacuated before there even WAS a hurricane, as fate would have it.  I give the Jackie Mason nose-thumb to any and all hurricanos. I am in the wilds of New Jersey and shall remain so for the nonce.

  6. Also as fate would have it, that picture was taken on the balcony of a Best Western on the east edge of Knoxville the last time I had to flee the windebeest.

  7. I’ve been known to stuff a ring of toilet paper inside the sweat band of a too big, but very nice hat and have also resorted to extreme stretching maneuvers for one a mite too small.   When I went to military school they “recycled” the uniforms, and it was there I discovered the genuine hat stretcher. Made of wood, had a crank you turned to make it work.

  8. Lord of the winds! I feel thee nigh,
I know thy breath in the burning sky!
And I wait, with a thrill in every vein,
For the coming of the hurricane!

    [yada yada yada]

I seek ye vainly, and see in your place
The shadowy tempest that sweeps through space,
A whirling ocean that fills the wall
Of the crystal heaven, and buries all.
And I, cut off from the world, remain
    Alone with the terrible hurricane.

  9. Cenk Uygur the definitely no longer young Turk is another one on my please go somewhere and rot list.  After the way TYT treated Hillary and kept Sanders up alive long after he was done plus all the nonsense at the convention, it is no surprise he’s trying to keep Sanders alive again.

  10. the emperor golfs while dorian churns

    cbs news:

President Trump is spending his Saturday at Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Virginia, as Southern states on the East Coast brace for landfall of a Category 4 hurricane. Mr. Trump canceled a weekend visit to Poland to monitor Hurricane Dorian from Camp David.
“To ensure that all resources of the federal government are focused on the arriving storm, I have decided to send our Vice President Mike Pence to Poland this weekend in my place,” Mr. Trump said on Thursday. “It’s something very important for me to be here. This storm looks like it could be a very, very big one indeed.”
Hurricane Dorian, which could affect more than 20 million Americans, may spare Florida from a direct hit and make landfall over South Carolina on Wednesday or Thursday. State of emergencies are in effect for the entire states of Florida and North Carolina, and 12 counties in Georgia.

  11. note that the twit bunkered down for duty only when mal a ego and his other florida properties were storm targeted.  shows how little he’s concerned with S.C.

  12. on fedoras and such,  treat yourself to visiting in new orleans the 125 yo Meyer the Hatter aka “the south’s largest hat store”

fascinating clerks who knew who when.  I think some even worked there at its nineteenth century opening.

  13. The Alfa-Romeo of Hat World would be The Borsalino. That one in the pic is a mere La Scala.
Yep, put that pic up all along the coastline and that old hurricane would be wiping its  eyes and clamoring for a rematch.

  14. Couple or more people in Odessa, Texas are reputed to have hijacked a mail truck and have driven it all over town and are shooting at people.

  15. Oh, Trump stayed in the States instead of going to Poland, as he was scheduled, because Lech Walesa insulted him.  He’s a big *****

  16. …some more of that good stuff to enjoy if you’re not shot or in a cage right now:

    …lol, the record skips

  17. Our band backed Jerry Butler at Art’s New Seaside, a beach pavilion on the Isle of Palms, in 1967.  Nice man, solid show.
Pat Conroy wrote a book about that place and other places like it. It’s called BEACH MUSIC.

  18. Haven’t played out in a few years now.  Not into driving around late at night and just not into the hassle of it.  Plus Dr Dave, my drummer and partner for years, died, and my favorite bass player of all time, Mike, had a stroke and is in assisted living, can’t play; our sax man Johnny Wilson got new teefs which for some reason caused him to be unable to blow. and….other than those guys musicians are a real pain in the ass so it became easier not to play.
Johnny played with Mussolini’s kid while in the army stationed in Europe somewhere.
I still have carte blanche at this one joint on the island though, could throw a little thing in there if I had to.

  19. If you’re a talented digital musician and are reading this, please fix the entire Beatles catalogue, TIA

Ok keep it funky y’all, try not to get shot or deported

  20. Beautiful picture, Mr Sturgeone, extremely sharp, colorful and textured.
Also, great music, courtesy of several Trail Hands.
It’s been a wonderful day for me.
I just wish it had been wonderful for everyone else, too. sigh
