    Hurricane Matthew battered the Florida coast with powerful winds, potentially devastating storm surges and torrential rain on Friday, leaving hundreds of thousands without power as those remaining in the storm’s path were ordered to shelter in place.

    The western eye wall of Matthew brushed by Cape Canaveral, home of the Kennedy Space Center, producing wind 115 mpg gusts there at around 5:30 a.m. on Friday.

    More than 300,000 people were already without power across the state of Florida.

  13. The latest example for me is the unending noise about Bill Clinton’s seeming slam on the ACA (Obamacare) and the willful misunderstanding of his comments.

    There was ONE exactly ONE short clip of Pelosi commenting that the amendment that would have fixed the problem by allowing the pooling of small businesses rather than treating them as individuals was killed by the GOP and then nothing other than the negative coverage of Clinton.

    The GOP did it to protect the Insurance Company profits decreased by allowing pre-existing conditions and loss of life time limits on coverage such a genetic conditions. The Corps wouldn’t have lost money just taken a hit on the massive percentages.  It was one of the prices paid to get the bill at all just like inability to negotiate drug prices.  Now they blame the President for the problems they caused.

     

  14. the sun will shine, eventually, over the entire sunshine state…this is not over by any means.  I am glad to see so many safe and unlike Haiti? The humans of the US of AA are warned, directed and saved by their government.   A nod to technology and humans,  I am also waiting for the head of trump’s super pac, scott, to get off of the air waves…a fairly debase human.  I also noticed yesterday that the repugs shamed Hillary for wanting to advertise on the weather channel (Comcast/Universal).  She withdrew the ad buy…trump is already advertising on the weather channel here.  Last night there were many severe storms in the midwest, but nothing of the duration of Matthew.  She should be allowed to advertise wherever she wants to…double standard again, foul.

    good news?  I doubt if many will watch the townhall live…a format I find rigged and uncomfy.   I hope Hillary just gushes over loving on her country…not mention hard work, but efficient work of government.  I always doubt that some humans after all if this election time really can’t make-up their minds…I think they are fibbing.  : O  My advice?  Ennie, minnie, mynie, mo.

  15. Now, as some are being liberated from public shelters, I hope they take the time to remove their personal trash and return the spaces they used to the condition in which they found them (or better).

    There is nothing more angrifying/discouraging than for building managers to walk into the spaces they made available for others’ safety only to find them trashed. We’ve seen numerous shelters removed from the availability list because of the thoughtless acts of others.

  21. stay safe, mixers…I know the two party system gets knocked every election cycle, especially in the race for the WH (we all elect the POTUS). Whitehouse.gov is filled with signed petitions asking for the popular vote to take over the electoral college.  Over my lifetime?  I have seen a few parties try to gain power from the top down…hijack the big job.  The green party, the libertarian parties need to takeover at the grassroots level…work like the dems and repugs do, year after year, locally.   A analog lifetime of work.  To me the two party system, binary, yes or no, on or off mentality is better for most humans.   Multiple choice questions?  Give me true or false….the new digital reality.  I like a robust two party system…easy choice.  The states do deserve their moment in the representative democracy…the republic survives by its individual states and territories.  Plus a lazy human like me?  Let the states get their primary business done to their rules and let us decide, nationally between the choices offered.  I do believe in majority rule…voting for someone who has a chance of winning.  I also realize that it is everyone else’s America, too.  My hope is that anyone of majority age who wants to vote?  They are able to vote and make a choice.

  22. good luck to Georgia, South and North Carolina coastal citizens…about a week ago, I spotted Matthew off the shore of Venezuela…near Aruba.  Aruba is famous for its doldrums…calm winds and lack of hurricanes.  Once the storm became a hurricane off of the Leewards islands, it developed another eye wall.  Although this is usually a sign of weakening storm,  the storm gathered strength and moved northward.  Next to Florida, another, second eye wall was prevalent.  Now as the hurricane heads to the the catcher mitt coastline of the southeast US?  A new experience for many.  This time, the storm is coming from the south…not the usual east movement of past hurricanes.  Hurricane Matthew will be studied for some time…a hard one to predict on past occurrences and pathways of the ‘normal’ cyclone movement.

Point of interest:  you might see Daufuskie Island in the news a bit……it’s the island off Beaufort only accessible by boat…..it was the subject of Pat Conroy’s first book, “The Water is Wide”, which someone turned into a movie called “Conrack”.  It’s name derives from Gullah, da fuss key, the first key…….they are currently in harm’s way.

    Daufuskie Islanders as a rule refuse to evacuate.

    newsday: Stork hides from Hurricane Matthew in zoo bathroom in St. Augustine, Florida

    ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Humans aren’t the only ones hunkering down as Hurricane Matthew batters Florida. A stork has apparently found refuge in a zoo bathroom.

    The St. Augustine Alligator Farm and Zoological Park has shared a photo of a marabou storkinside a bathroom at the facility. The zoo’s Facebook page jokes in the caption, “no species discrimination in this bathroom!”

    The stork isn’t the only animal taking cover from the storm. The zoo also shared photos of young alligators swimming indoors in plastic tubs and other birds walking around freely inside a building.

    The zoo says it has moved all of its birds and mammals inside.

  46. Post-the Charleston Nine tragic murders, Gov Haley has shown herself to be a compassionate leader who has disassociated herself from the Deplorables (much to their dismay.) During the incredibly bad flooding that we had last October, she marshaled the State’s resources in a credible manner holding agency leaders’ feet to the fire. Her rebuffs of Trumpian overtures has been refreshing. And, her management of pre-disaster planning during this episode is noteworthy.

  49. Watching that little red hurricane ball wibble-wobble up the coast shows me just how tenuous outcomes can be in disaster situations! The last minute wobble away from Cape Canaveral/Titusville was only ten miles but may have made a huge difference in loss of life and property! Of course final inspections of the area have not been done and we still have a dangerous storm surge yet to come. I think the President’s warnings about that say it all. This was on the weather channel site:

    President Obama also warned of the dangers of storm surge today.

    “Many of you will remember Hurricane Sandy, where initially people thought this doesn’t look as bad as we thought and then suddenly you get massive storm surge and a lot of people were severely affected,” Obama said. “We’re still on the front end of this hurricane, we’re not on the back end. So, we don’t know how bad the damage could end up, we don’t know how severe the storm surge could end up being. And we’re not going to know for three, four, five days what the ultimate effects of this are.”

    Now, pix are coming in from the Daytona/St Augustine/Jacksonville areas and those look much worce! I’m praying for no loss of life in those areas.

    I watched local Orlando area stations all morning. Mainly 2, 6 and 9. Finally just stayed on WESH 2 the nbc station. It never ceases to amaze me watching weather reporters telling people to stay in their homes or shelters and not go outside, while they are getting blown to bits and pelted with rain! A few years ago (don’t remember which hurricane it was) I saw a reporter almost hit by some large flying debris. They always look like they could be injured at any moment! Today WESH 2 interviewed the stupidest person in Florida and just kept talking to him even after the reporter acknowledged what a moron he was (for anyone intelligent enough to get his meaning, which the moron wasn’t) then he just kept asking the guy more questions and letting him ramble about how he went out and even though a large tree fell on his car he would do it again! I actually tweeted to the station that it was wrong to let that interview go on so long. It encourages dangerous behavior in people.

    Hundreds are dead in Haiti and the Bahamas. So far I’ve only seen one report of a death in Fla…I hope it stays that way!

Northern FL ain’t out of the woods yet, but the eye is staying offshore and the storm surge is about half what they feared it would be.  Biggest issue will prolly be flooding – and there will be a lot of that between NE FL & SC. My hope is that people realize that a lot of water is going to hit the coast from both directions.  Get out those hip waders.

  70. patd, thanks for the update on the wildlife…I read that there are birds stuck in the eye of the hurricane.  Faux News finally releasing short sound-bite only from the access hollywood vid and it did not release the entire vid or sound…mentioned that the race is still a toss-up.  Read the apology with the emphasis on Bill Clinton.   Switched to story that immigrants are rushing into the US of AA to vote.  Complete denial at Faux News.

    I wish some sports teams would refute the claim that this is locker room talk…dragging down all men.
