  1. written about the happy picture above by the guardian:  Why are the Bushes, Clintons, Obamas and Melania smiling so broadly at a funeral?

[….] The warmth between them – Republican George W Bush with arms around both his wife and Democrat Hillary – is the camaraderie you often see between one-time partisan rivals now bonded by having shared a rare and extraordinary experience. (You see something similar in those pictures of duelling heavyweight boxers reunited in retirement.) But there’s something else too.   The picture is not sombre, even though this is a funeral. Obama and Bill Clinton are smiling broadly; W has that lopsided grin that suggests he’s cracked one of his fratboy jokes. They seem relaxed. And the source of that relaxation? Could it possibly be their collective relief that Trump is not there?   That, surely, is the one thing this group can agree on. Bush Sr revealed last year that he voted for Hillary in 2016 rather than back the official Republican nominee whom he’d dismissed as a “blowhard”. Bush Jr said he left his ballot blank. Neither of them ever endorsed Trump, who had mocked son/brother Jeb Bush as “low energy” and whom Barbara herself had condemned as a “comedian”, a “showman” and an appalling sexist. Bushes, Clintons, Obamas: all have their own reasons to despise the Donald. He denied Hillary her dream; he claimed Barack Obama was not born in the US; he is the very opposite of a Bush Republican.   Which leaves Melania. Shouldn’t she be uncomfortable among all these people who despise her husband? What explains her apparent ease, smiling as readily as the rest of them?   The clue might be in some of the other pictures taken at Saturday’s service. There she was, seated next to Barack Obama, looking positively cheery. “Have you ever, ever, EVER seen Melania smile like this, and look this relaxed, beside her own husband? Ever?,” tweeted the science writer Steve Silberman. Others noted the oddity that here was the first lady looking happier than she had in ages – at a funeral.

There is indeed no shortage of pictures of Melania looking miserable or ignored by Trump, as he walks up or down the stairs of Air Force One without her, not showing his wife even the most basic courtesy, let alone marital affection. Compared to the hostile environment that is a Trump marriage, a moment with the real-life presidents’ club must have felt like blissful respite.

  2. This is begging for a new graphic novel/super heroes series.

Dame Judy Dench as Hillary Rodham

John Travolta as William Jefferson Clinton

The Obamas are too cool for impersonators, sorry

Phone calls, excuses & passing references as the Carters

Melania as Melania, with a well placed boot kick to someone’s [redacted] ?????

    Take that, Democracy villains!!

  3. BlueBronc…  perfect caption!  And I too took not only yesterday off from politics…  I took the whole weekend starting with Friday night.

Now I feel refresh and ready for battle…  oh wait…  I need a cuppa coffee first…

John Oliver Trolls Trump by Purchasing Pro-Iran Nuclear Deal Ads on Sean Hannity’s Fox News Show
The ‘Last Week Tonight’ host wants President Trump to know that not recertifying the Iran nuclear deal could be ‘disastrous.’

  5. I agree with Flatus’ comment yesterday.

As to what Obama said to make Melania smile?

Being the first family is a unique experience and there are many relatable stories to share that have nothing to do with politics. For the first time she was in the only support group for people in her situation. Also she was an equal accorded all the due respect of her position. I doubt that she gets much respect most days.

  6. As to the picture:

It looks like the family gathering at the old folks home celebrating Gramps’ birthday.

And gramps is obviously proud of each and every one, except maybe Bill who is way in the back.

  7. trumperdoo continues his silence on the waffle house hero!   How awesome an unarmed man stopped the massacre.   A man of color, no less.  After Parkland?  trump wanted more guns. More caring and loving guards.  AND “if you see something, say something” was being bantered about…the fbi dropped the ball about the Parkland shooter, etc.  This time? Guns returned to reinking’s father most likely because he was white and a business owner.   The shooter was in the hands of the secret service and the fbi took his guns away and then returned them to Pop.  I wonder if the Father can be charged with any crime.

I read the shooter had time to go home and put on a pair of pants after fled the waffle house.

  8. Very sad, KGC, this guy had a public record of gun brandishing and exhibitionism.   Plus, the WH incident. No one can find him now…he should have had some sort of treatment…anything to keep him off the streets.    Instead he was free ‘to move about the cabin’ to kill with his returned guns.

  9. I haven’t seen the parents of shooter — urging him to turn himself in.   From the Tennessean.com
In May 2016, the Tazewell Sheriff’s Office responded to a call involving Reinking, according to police reports obtained by the Peoria Journal Star. Reinking told law enforcement he thought Swift was stalking him. Law enforcement took Reinking to a local hospital for an evaluation.
In June 2017, police records state Reinking threatened someone with an AR-15 while wearing a pink dress. After threatening the man, Reinking drove to a public pool and dove in before exposing himself to others at the pool, according to the reports.
When police contacted Reinking’s father, the father said “awhile back he took 3 rifles and a hand gun away and locked them up when Travis was having problems. (The father) wanted to move out of state so he gave them back to (Travis)…” the reports state.
Police told Reinking’s father “he might want to lock the guns back up until Travis gets mental help which he stated he would.”
No one at the pool wanted to press charges, police reports states.
The next month, Reinking was arrested at the White House.

  10. Arthur Phillip Charles?  Just please, not Albert.  Prince Albert in a can, and all.

Laura & Obama probably trying to find a place to grab a smoke.

  11. The kid who shot someone at school in Ocala on Friday needed help, too.   It’s so sad that he couldn’t have just asked for help & gotten it.  He said he did what he did because if he waited, h would’ve done something worse.  Shooting into a classroom was his fry for help.  Sad.

Where is the media on this?  Instead of glorifying violence on scripted shows & covering cold cases ad nasuem, why not talk about solutions for mental health, isolation, bullying, etc.?

I would love to see all networks combine forces to take on this enormous issue.

  12. The CEO of Korean Air has fired his spoiled children and apologized “to all Koreans.”

Can you imagine that happening here?  I can’t.

    Drinking Liberally Shot of Truth

    Mass Destruction and Mass Distraction
Submitted by Justin Krebs on Thu, 04/19/2018 – 12:08pm.

Trump illegally fires missiles at Syria
helping no Syrians, making us no safer,
as part of no broader strategy,
and wishes he could have fired more.

He’s pushing a secretary of state
    who doesn’t believe in diplomacy,
& sent him to liaise with North Korea
for talks it’s not clear he takes seriously.

And he may be launching missiles & trade wars
to distract from legal & lascivious scandals
that are catching up to his closest cronies.

He fired missiles instead of Mueller,
but it’s still unconstitutional, harmful, reckless,
as he uses mass destruction for mass distraction.

We deserve a drink. And some democracy.

    DRINKING LIBERALLY
Find – or start – a chapter near you.

  14. Flatus,  I kinda like that Living Liberally idea.  Around here it would be a very small chapter and would have to be named living wishfully.  Heck, depending on who you ask, Don Blankenship may be the leading Repug candidate to face Manchin in the Senate race here.

  15. the American world is truly upside down when a late night comic gives a rational explanation and background of an important nuclear deal that our president has little understanding of and no sane idea what to do next regarding it.

  16. Pogo, I think I might enjoy the Liberally experience. In all my life I’ve only gone into a civilian drinking establishment once. That was to see what one was like. It sucked in comparison with the NCO clubs that I was familiar with where, after a few minutes, you weren’t a stranger.

  17. I think George HW Bush is saying I think Michele and Melanoma should stand on either side of me …real close.

  18. seems Michael is fishing for twit to tweet at him throwing out tantalizing chum to lure him this morning:

How do we know that Mr. Cohen and Mr. Trump are in full panic mode? Because they have now called in the propaganda machine and people masquerading as journalists to do their dirty work for them. Why can’t they handle us directly? I thought they were tough guys?

  19. meanwhile back in the surreal world:

“We are living through an all-out war on truth, facts and reason,” Clinton said at the PEN America World Voices Festival in Manhattan on Sunday.

“When leaders deny things we can see with our own eyes, like the size of a crowd at the inauguration, when they refuse to accept settled science when it comes to urgent challenges like climate change … it is the beginning of the end of freedom, and that is not hyperbole. It’s what authoritarian regimes through history have done.”
The former presidential candidate, secretary of state, senator and first lady was delivering the Arthur Miller Freedom to Write lecture. She began by discussing threats to press freedom and free speech including in Vladimir Putin’s Russia. But she soon turned her remarks to the US under Trump, saying such freedoms were “in the most perilous position I’ve seen in my lifetime”.

“Today we have a president who seems to reject the role of a free press in our democracy,” she said. “Although obsessed with his own press coverage, he evaluates it based not on whether it provides knowledge or understanding, but solely on whether the daily coverage helps him and hurts his opponents.

“Now, given his track record, is it any surprise that according to the latest round of revelations, he joked about throwing reporters in jail to make them talk?”

The reference to revelations from memos by former FBI director James Comey was Clinton’s only reference to Comey, who was fired by Trump.

  20. Flatus – I need to find my local chapter of Drinking Liberally.  It was after a night there (or was it in a gay bar?) in Denver followed by the rest of night at a vat of local brew beer that I agreed to run for office.

Something funny is that the ‘combover’ is running out of cotton candy.  Today’s pics show a head sans hair.  The dictator-wannabe is without hair. hehe

I need to check out how close in the tree my new cousin is to me.  Hint: he is not over twenty links.

At some point the freaking weird Sara is going to break and spew stuff that is forbidden by the bleached asshole pencetration

  21. I ended up with Bush cousins (9th & 10th, I believe) when I went lookin’, but also Taft in the same line.

I do think Trump looks like the job is aging him already.  Hard to believe, as much time as he spends golfing.

Macron & his wife seem a better match (a real match) moreso than Melania and Orange Julius Cesar.

  22. His worst nightmare is full upon him ……the presidency is known for  rapid visible aging of the president.  Guess he didnt think about that part of it…….he might become a drooling Marius……

  23. The Macrons are dining at Mount Vernon.  The beauty of the setting almost makes up for the company they will be forced to keep.

  24. “Manuel, I’ve thrown more dollars across the Potomac than anyone in history. True. Anyone will tell you.”
